Re: faux-tina paint jobs

thanks chizzler! Had to fix a coolant leak at the water neck 2 days ago, but was able to go out for a short ride after. Hopefully soon i'll be doing a rear axle swap to 5 lug to match the front, new rear gears, POL trailing arm cross member and some motor work. It has a GM 350 crate motor and a 700R4 trans now, but has highway gears in the rear. Its fun to cruise around in, but lacks the power and rumble i miss. Some good looking trucks on here, any one on here from NJ?

@chuckmc8 LOVE your truck, that is my favorite body style.

Apologize if this has been discussed already in this post. However, does anyone have any tips on how one would preserve the real patina on a truck? I.e..truck is lightly rusted, what can be used to preserve that look and prevent further rust?

I was just looking at some pics on Pinterest, saw what looks like your rig, or its your twin, same dents in the tool box etc. Only difference was the sign on the door. It's linked to eBay.

There are a few pictures floating around out there from when it was for sale before I got it. Some were of s wheel ad and others were from the original ad.

It has been a fun truck to own, many people stop by the house and want to buy it for their business. I put air ride on then installed an ls with a 4l80.

The cost of all that freaks out the people who think they can take it home for 2 grand!

Yeah right, 2k. It's a sweet pick up, would make for good advertising for a construction company, not to mention a functional work truck. There's a plumber around here with a clean 55-59 utility bed. He chirped second gear when I took this pic.

You can clear coat it either flat, satin or gloss. Nothing will prevent further rust other than removing the rust and sealing it. Rust is a cancer.
Even then it only slows rust - the steel wants to go home to mommy. It just does it in a time frame humans can't see.

But, if you like patina (rust), there isn't a real concern of our trucks rusting away in our lifetime as long as it isn't parked out in a field.

Absolutely Awesome Truck!
Beautiful Genuine Patina!
I personally wouldn't mess with it.

I'm not sure if he's trying to do Fauxtina, but either way, I think it looks really cool!

Here is my first ever attempt at patina. I think it turned out pretty good. Love how the hood turned out.

I like it.
I think the way you did just a very discreet sand-through helps with making it look close to real.

I like it too. Is that the original paint or did you just use old school colors? I really dig those 60-61 hoods.

I always wondered how it would work to use a sand blaster from a distance. Or to drag the panels across some sand.

All Krylon rattle can. I first painted the truck 3 shades of red and brown. Then covered the truck with Krylon Sea Glass. Only took 7 cans. Then started sanding. Got the out effect on the hood by painting over rock salt sprinkled over the "rust" layer. I may have 50 bucks in the entire paint job.

I'd say that was a well spent 50$! Nice job!

Thank you! Got some nice compliments so far. Came out much better than I expected for my first attempt. A lot of reading and YouTube watching before I started it
