Alarm deactivation

I need help! I bought an 88 GMC K1500 that has a PO installed alarm. I don't have the PO's number. It was having some starting problems so I took off all of the battery cables to clean them. When I tried to put them back on the alarm goes off. Is there a generic way to deactivate an alarm system. Not only does the horn blare and the lights flash now it won't start! I'm good with ripping the piece of crap out!!! But I'm hoping for a quicker fix...

Thanks,,,

Re: Alarm deactivation

sounds like its got an ignition lock out. if you don't have a remote for the alarm system then i would just yank it out. i think that just cutting the primary power wire to the system would lock out the ignition until you removed the whole system otherwise i'd cut the main power wire

Re: Alarm deactivation

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of too! I'll have to dig into it tomorrow to find it all. How many components are there in an average alarm and where are they located in general?

Re: Alarm deactivation

What brand is it? You may be able to get some data off of the 'net. But, you could run into what I did when I tried to get some info for my Viper 1000. I finally had to speak with some sales manager dude in L.A. who hooked me up with an installation manual download in PDF format.

Re: Alarm deactivation

Up-date...

Got about half way done removing the alarm system and found a toggle under the dash to kill the alarm...

A buddy at work told me to look for one. It was super small and pretty well hidden. Good job by the PO!!!

Anyways, it's out now and I'm glad. Like most stuff with this one it looks like a teenager installed it. I'm in management now, but before I worked as a mechanic on commercial aircraft navigation and communication systems. Meaning I know what proper routing and termination should look like and I know what passes for that in a car. But what I can't take is home made wire harnesses. Not trying to sound like an expert or anything, cause automotive electrical systems is far from my training. BUT, if you need extra wire for a project and you don't want to go to the store and buy some, it IS NOT ok to grab your folks toaster and cut the cord and wire that puppy up!!!

Sorry for the rant, thanks for listening...
