New carb loading up
I purchased a new 600 cfm Edelbrock Performer carb, installed it per directions on my stock 350, but I'm having a problem with loading up. When cold, first thing in the morning, she fires up clean with a tap of the key. After running awhile, especially at idle or after restarting shortly after being driven, the engine starts to misfire and load up. Electric choke works perfectly. When restarting after I make a short stop, to buy lunch for intance, I have to bury the pedal to get her started, generally creating a smoke show. At other times, though rarely, the engine runs smooth and clean most of the day. Today, I installed a fuel pressure gauge and it reads 7.0-7.5 psi when running, but climbs to 9.0 psi after shut-off. I have a stock fuel pump. Is my pump pushing too much pressure for this carburetor causing the needle not to seat properly, or could I have a problem carb?

Re: New carb loading up
You need to regulate your fuel pressure to 5.5 psi (max),with the eng running & I think that will fix the problem. I have also found that the edelbrock carbs like an insulator type gasket or spacer under them (helps with the hot start/rough idle issues). crazyL

Re: New carb loading up
Update: The fuel pressure helped, but was not the real problem. It turned out I had a very small hole in the modulator valve diaphragm. So small and that I thought the tranny fluid I was slowly losing was due to the leak around the pan.
One day, at a stop sign, the diaphragm let go altogether and I was enveloped in a huge cloud of white smoke. Of course I was stopped in one of the most environmentally consciencious areas known to man, surrounded by about forty cyclists. Soorrrrryyy! Just cause it's old doesn't mean you throw it away! I got home, replaced the modulator valve and no more smoke and more importantly no more loading up of the carb. It just goes to show you, ya never can tell.

Re: New carb loading up
A ticket for excessive smoke? I've never heard of anything like that. Was it a city ordinance or something cause of all the diesel trucks driven by kids that blow out the black smoke? I'm interested in this.

I don't have a pic, but welded up a bracket to mount the regulator at the front end of the passenger side head.
