Stock top end build

I was considering doing a top end build on a stock 350. stock pistons rods and crank, all from 76.. Has about 80,000 miles. Wanting more power around 300 something for a daily driver and for towing some times. Bad or Okay idea?

Re: Stock top end build

My 76 has 175K on the stock bottom end and still going strong. There may be better options to get more power, like a new Vortec engine for $2k. My truck came with a Trick Flow high torque 350 hp top end kit. I wasn't using the extra power so I put it on my Camaro and put the truck back to stock. There was a big difference in power all through the rpm range.

Re: Stock top end build

Leak down test.

If that shows favorable go with the plan. If not you may create a mosquito fogger when tightening up the top end. Removing the heads and accessing carbon patterns & cylinder ridge will tell more.

Most will tell you to never put rebuilt or new heads on a well used short block. I have done it several times with good results. It partly depends on how much more life you are expecting out of the engine after the work. I agree with doing a compression and leak down test on the engine first.

Re: Stock top end build

My 175K engine has the biggest ridge I ever saw on the top of the cylinders but it still doesn't puff any smoke. I'm kinda curious how far it will go. I still tow cars on 1000 mile road trips with it. I seem to have plenty of power for towing cars but if I lived out west with bigger mountains I may be wanting for more power. You do have dual exhaust don't you? Mine just has a Performer cam and headers.

Re: Stock top end build

Mine has 2 1/4 dual exhaust but still has stock exhaust manifolds. Im planning on putting heads on it in the near future. Cap, I generally use it to go to a couple shows about 250 miles away ea., towing every so often and snow days to work. Since I've bought it in 2015, I had only put about 8000 miles on it. I generally plan on using it the same each year. Till I find another show to haul the family to.
