Can I use this new compressor with R12 ?

The compressor says 134a and pag oil. Can I drain the oil and use mineral oil and use it for R12 on my truck? It says 220 cc which would be 7.4 oz would that be how much mineral oil I would use?

Re: Can I use this new compressor with R12 ?

I just bought one of these compressors last week in a kit. It even came with mineral oil for using r-12, based on me telling them it was for a 68 pickup. I would just fill it with mineral oil, mix it around and empty out. Do this a couple times to clear out the pag oil.

That doesn't give me much confidence. I hope it will last.

I've used them before with great success. I will never use another A6 again.

I've seen the clutch fail on one after 3 years. But I'd still use it if I can get it cheap enough.

Re: Can I use this new compressor with R12 ?

Ester based oils and mineral oils dislike each other. OP states a desire to use R12, why do so when 12 is so expensive? 134a has nearly the same properties as 12 over the entire temperature/pressure range. So a transition to 134a from 12 is seemless except for the oil chemistry.
But all that said I know of an individual that simply added 134a to a 12 system without modifications, and it has been working that way for years. Go figure when actions such as that go against all known refrigeration standards.
And if that isn't enough 134a is on the EPA hit list and about to become as expensive as other phased out refrigerants. The new classification of refrigerants is HFOs, till someone figures out they are bad for some reason.

I think you meant to say pag and mineral oils dislike each other. Ester is compatible with both

I have some R12 to put in it.

Re: Can I use this new compressor with R12 ?

I'll never use 134 in a factory system again either. R-12 isn't expensive, I bought it for $10 a can at a swap meet. It's about $20 a can on CL, which is about the same as 134 at the parts store here. You fill it once and you are done, it doesn't go dry so the cost difference is nothing when you factor in all the crap you have to do to convert to 134 to get it to work efficiently in triple digit temps.

Re: Can I use this new compressor with R12 ?

On the Classic Industries site for one of their A6 replacement A/C compressors, they state the following regarding using R-12:

Important: Compressor is pre-oiled for ues with R134A, when used with R12 the oil will have to be drained and replaced with an R12 compatible oil.
