Re: Can You Look At My Reared ?

That looks funny. I always thought a transparent carburetor spacer and snorkel type air cleaner would be fun, preferably made out of thick pyrex.

Re: Can You Look At My Reared ?

If it's for a trailer queen, I can understand the uniqueness of it.. But for a daily driver, I'd fear if an errant stone or piece of metal would strike the cover, the results would be at best -- oil all over everything, or worse -- differential pieces all over the place when the lubricant runs out.

Re: Can You Look At My Reared ?

That’s pretty cool. I saw a video a few years ago where someone made a clear head for a Briggs and Stratton engine and had it running. Pretty cool to see it all working.

Re: Can You Look At My Reared ?

After WWII my father started a business by buying scrap military plexiglass from yards around Florida. He would cut, polish, heat and form it into hundreds of items. My mother could reverse drill it with dental hand drills and create incredibly fine detail scenes. She would then paint the drilled area. After polishing the image would appear floating in the plexiglass. They made jewelry also and sold it to just about every gift shop on the beaches surrounding the state. Pieces that once were aircraft windshields could easily have been formed into a cover like in the above photo. I still have a few of the pieces my mother crafted back in the 40’s.

Re: Can You Look At My Reared ?

They used to make transparent valve covers. Don't know if they still do.
I'm guessing that cover is made of 1/4" Lexan. Formed with some type of heat.

I've threatened to bore a hole in my carb and put in a sight glass, but never really cared what was going on back there in the nether regions

Re: Can You Look At My Reared ?

Back in the 70's they made a clear distributor cap, maybe they still do....it was one big blur at night. Just a novelty.

Edited: Got my curiosity up they still make em

I lived in Ohio in the early 90s. I was at the dragstrip and saw the Jegs cars had valve covers like that. Way cool

My wife would absolutely do this if such a hubcap existed.

I doubt this is that fragile. It's plexiglass, pretty tough stuff. Throw a rock at a flat plexiglass plate and see if you can break it.

But, it definitely is not a practical thing. Like 72CustomCamper said, let that gear oil get some miles on it and it won't be a pretty sight, if you can see through what clings to the cover.

I have some prettier rear end pictures but I can't show them here

You mean there's something in front of my Blazer's gas tank and skid plate?

Reminds of when I was 14 years old and wanted to remove a valve cover on my dad's Pontiac to see what was under it. That was a definite no-go!

That's what I was thinking, plastics can be very tough, or so I'm counting on it, since my new hip is made of the stuff......... I like rear ends. My 71 RX2 was sure cool, and 67-72 are sure fine.

Re: Can You Look At My Reared ?

Some years ago read something about Gale Banks using clear covers to document oil movement inside the differential. Maybe it's one of their's.

Re: Can You Look At My Reared ?

Unique is all I can say. It is a clear dome. The stock diff cover is designed to sling oil to the pinion. Most aftermarket high capacity flat covers eliminate this function as well. Gale Banks has a video showing how this works. That diff cover is not from Banks. They have a cover that is supposed to offer more cooling.
