What transmission in 1984 Chevrolet Scottsdale

Good Day:

I am about to sink my life savings into a beautiful 1984 Chevrolet Scottsdale shortbox 2WD. My question......(cause its hard to get a straight answer on web)......what automatic transmissions were offered for this year? The guy tells me it is a 3 Speed automatic.....but I always thought they had Overdrive in 84 which would make it a 4 speed.

Any help would mean the world to me. I know someone out there can help me!!! Thanks soooo much!!

Gary!

I'm not sure about the Turbo 350, but you could still get a Turbo 400 in 85 at least. I had one back in around 87-88 a Chevy K10 with turbo 400. Got a buddy with a 84 C20 crew with 400 as well.

Re: What transmission in 1984 Chevrolet Scottsdale

try to get a pic of the transmission pan and post the pic on here. with a truck that old who knows what was swapped in over the years. almost every 80s truck i ever bought that was supposed to have the 4speed 700r4 had a th350 in its place.

i owned a 84 gmc jimmy and a 84 k5 blazer both came with the 700r4 but only one had it still in the truck.

For what it's worth, I had a restored '84 Scottsdale K10 many years ago. It had a th350 in it. Not sure if it was stock or not though.

A lot of owners were swapping out the 4 speed 700r4 for TH350 or TH400 because the earlier 700r4's were quite weak and problematic.

My old 84 had a turbo 350 C behind a 305.

If the truck came with the 700r4 the shift indicator on the column may still be present . It could be a silverado or sierra thing . Be interesting to know . Someone with more knowledge may have some input . Keith Seimore would be a good one to know which ones came with the 4 speed .

And of course with the age things can be changed as some has mentioned above .

Re: What transmission in 1984 Chevrolet Scottsdale

My 84 GMC came with the 700-R4,but now has a 350 in it.
If you look closely, there may be a wiring harness with connector laying on or around the brake booster. It will be white plastic with holes for 4 wires, but only 3 are actually there. This connector would have gone to the 700-R4 trans, and usually isn't removed.
I have a 82,K-10 that I bought new.I put a t-400 in it in 1985.

Depends on the engine selection, emissions category (California vs Federal) and rear axle ratio.

This '84 powertrain chart is a little smeared, but you can make out the RPOs "MX0" and "MX1". Those are the "merchandised" options for transmission type, with MX0 being an auto trans with overdrive; MX1 for auto trans without (ie, 3 speed).

As you would expect, the lower numerical ratios get the 3 speed whereas the higher numerical ratios would get the overdrive.

Re: What transmission in 1984 Chevrolet Scottsdale

Can you have the seller shoot you a photo of the SPID label, from in the glovebox?

It will have all of the RPO content listed (assuming it is still there, and that no one has swapped the label or the glovebox door).

K

Posting the California powertrain chart, and a link to the generic info packet from the GM Heritage Center archives:

Re: What transmission in 1984 Chevrolet Scottsdale

To go along with that, the TH350C and TH400 were both used to fill that MX0 option based on GVW.

My 1984 5.0 K10 had 2.73 gears and a TH350C.

The transmission options were independent of the trim level. IE Silverado didn't mean one or the other.
