Still a bit hard to understand but I THINK I see what's happening.

The part I'm struggling with is that one panel goes between the structural bow (you don't see) & the outer bow you DO see. But the other panel goes in the gap that's IN the bow.

This SEEMS like there would be a noticeable difference in the flush fit of the two panels, but chances are I am agonizing over nits and it'll look fine once I sand/paint the bows gloss black (or whatever color) with new black headliner panels.

I also have this model but don't have a vin tag.
Is it possible for you to take a picture (closeup) of that tag?
At least than i lnow what to look for.

I don't have a close up picture...and I wouldn't post my VIN information anyway, sorry. But you can see what the plate looks like on this link (a lot clearer than mine would be anyway). It's about 3/4 of the way down. It is installed on the passenger side of the cowl, under the hood and down fairly low on the side...at least that's where it is on my '46. Hope this helps.
