Tach information, what is this one?

Trying to identify what tach I have? Does it need a transmitter? Searched the model number and part number without any results. They are:
o Model RD-5C; and
o Part No. 3771216

Mark's thread "Sun Tachometer Retrospective" was referenced to me by member MG. It has good information on GMC tachs. The Chevy and GMC tachs were manufactured by different manufactures per per information posted here, GMCs were made by Sun, Chevy not sure but possibly made by chevrolet or one of their subsidiary companies.

I believe this gauge cluster with tach photos below are out of a BIG truck as it has two warning red lights below the gauges that say "Over Speed" and "Tand M Lock".

Re: Tach information, what is this one?

3771216 shows up as a 1961 1962 tach which would need a transmitter . Only good way to tell is take the tach out and look in the side of it at the electronics. Both Chevy and GMC tachs in 60-66 were Sun tachs

Re: Tach information, what is this one?

Jon,

Removed it from gauge cluster and looked inside, not much their, pointer needle attached to a coil looking devise. Will post some pictures of tach insides.

Thanks for information Jon.

If you decide you can't use it, put me in line for it, please.

Re: Tach information, what is this one?

Photos of tach out of gauge cluster, along with last one showing transmitter model number.

Was 1963 first year they stop using the external transmitter for all truck including big and pick-ups?

Note: 3852111 part number for Chevy tach W/250 or 292 from earlier thread.

thanks,
Les

Re: Tach information, what is this one?

Now if you separate the metal backing plate from the tach the Sun tag should be on the back of the tach. This tach needs a transmitter. I've never seen this style in 64 up clusters , must have been added ?

Yup that one uses the transmitter. Looks like it is in nice shape.

Sort of related, with these tachs that require a transmitter, what was the popular or factory install location of the transmitter box?

Thanks,
Scott

Years ago, I removed a factory tach cluster from a '62 C60 farm truck. That one had the transmitter box mounted inside the cab on the firewall. It was over on the passenger side near where the heater duct comes through the firewall. However, that's the only example of a factory installed tach I've come across in a 60-62 truck so can't say for sure that's a standard location for the transmitter box in all 60-62 trucks.
