Talking Upgrading

Been at the beach house for a week. Just got back to Liberty SC. Got counter tops & cabinets to install @ our son house.

Mean while @ the beach house the past few day while there. This all started about 2pm Tuesday. First picture is what we started with. The front porch had steps going down both sides. Both sets had started rotting so we had them torn out and replaced the ones going to the back side but as you can see we added another porch to the front and will have a door cut into the end screened in porch that faces the drive way. It's gonna be nice this summer when we are cooking and eating outside.
Rhett had a great time playing in the post holes before we concreted them.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Man, you really added a lot of extra space! I like a covered porch. Always have. Looks great and your helper looks like he's staying busy!

Re: Upgrading

Have you seen Rhett around since you poured the concrete?

I'll say you added a lot of deck space. And the bugs are going to have to find someone else to bite while you're eating outside

Thumbs up Re: Upgrading

Man Rhett really had a good time playing under the house while the skirting was removed. The wife didn't like it but I let him go all under the house. He even started spotting stuff to me to fix! Yea I'll have to get under there and fix it sometime.
In the summer we usually have about 6 couples eating at the house and always needed more room and seating. Not anymore. Now we can eat outside even if it's raining!

Re: Upgrading

My friends down in Colorado bought an old log cabin. Zoning and permitting are a real pain in that Soviet County (we left 23 years ago; scenery ain't all it's cracked up to be).

But anyway … he was able to build a wooden deck beside the cabin without a permit. Then later he was able to build a roof over the deck also without a permit. That was so nice that they decided to close in the covered porch to make an extra room

Colorado has gone crazy with rules

They are on something like 90 acres and about 1/4 mile from the road, but you can see across because right there is just sagebrush. Their cabin is backed up against a steep slope that goes right up to the continental divide. Motorcycles and ATVs scream up and down the road all summer now, he told me.

Re: Upgrading

I just got caught last month closing in a carport w/o a permit down in one of the worst two "Could I have a couple extra regulations, please?" counties. I guess most people work for the gummit or other entity where they are constantly regulated, so they hold their hand out for more and embrace the concept.

All I'm doing is closing in open area of an existing structure. No electrical work, and I removed the t&g ceiling to add fire code drywall, then reinstalled, because the gable of the house (brick walls) wasn't fire resistant. I know what I'm doing, I know the codes, and I build it right. I regulate that w/o the gummit.

This carport that has stood since the '60s or earlier now is required to have 30" deep continuous footers & walls because the space between the posts is being filled in. Ridiculous. They also are concerned with it complying to today's wind shear standards when it has stood for over 60 years with just posts holding up a roof just waiting for a serious wind to lift it and tear it off the house. Wind shear? It is built up against a doggone brick house, not free standing! I understand ALL the principles involved in building structures. This is not about public safety. It is about revenue and keeping the public in their place. And people down there seem to eat it up.

Re: Upgrading

Closing in the sides of the carport would make it more resistant to wind damage.

An open carport is sort of like an airplane wing waiting to take off.

Man, you've made so many Changes Andy!

For the next one, you need to lift the whole thing up about 12' and pour a pad. You'll have a beach shop

Re: Upgrading

^^^ I like that! Then put a deck up on the roof! He could probably see the ocean .

I was in Myrtle Beach for the bike rally one year with a new engine and a brand new crap ignition, as it turns out... after trying everything else under the sun. I finally got it right Saturday morning, so one night out on the bike... woo woo!

Anyway, down along Ocean Blvd this bike mechanic, Big Byrd, had a cottage rented that of coarse was up on pilings. They had a 24/7 bike shop set up under there. They go to bike week to make money! I was impressed with his make shift shop. It seemed permanent. Then there were the guys who rented a huge storage space to do the same thing. Open all night! My night life was haulin' the Hog around in my '71 hanging out at these places messing with the bike. I finally 86ed the Crane Hi-4 and put a Dyna2000 no module ign in with my father in laws Handy Andy (no offense) Tools.

What I'm saying is I wish I was in Myrtle beach and not stuck here

My builder friend from down there is concerned they may not like the beams that support the rafters. Those rely on a beam at mid-span, so three 18' beams. I guarantee they aren't to code, but I didn't build that. How can they hold me accountable (well, the homeowner) for how it was built 60 years ago? And I dunno, my common sense way of thinking has me asking isn't the proof in the pudding? I mean hasn't any question whether those beams would support that roof been answered at this point? And my need to see some positive effect from a regulation has me wanting to ask what effect will any of this have on anyone's well being? Who is being saved here and from what?

Look up Howard County, MD (buncha stuck up halfass rich...)

I don't doubt it. We were in Gunnison County, CO.

Someone we knew was trying to start a Christian boys camp. Before they would approve anything, he had to submit a "50 year plan" and they would never in the future approve anything that wasn't on that plan. So they dreamed big and put down anything/everything they could possibly imagine ever doing. The zoning board looked at it and said "that's too much, Not approved."

And that was the end of that endeavor.

Talking Re: Upgrading

Jesse I have actually talked about that sir! My wife though has put a stop to it. No permit for that will ever happen!

Well one reason I haven't pulled permits is we had plan on building the cover when we moved in but other things kept us from doing it. The additional porch we didn't need one. Well I sold the 56 week before last and we had the extra cash to finally getter done!
I'm very pleased to because all this is costing us less $$$$ than we thought. I did some trading with Steve who built the new deck. So it only cost me material's & a old golf cart he wanted that I had. I was asking $1000.00 for it so he traded his labor out for it. I was happy and he did a great job.
The screen in part is costing the most and it's way less than I had thought it to be which I thankful for. All in all less than 8k in everything.

PSSS,
We had a porch gathering tonight! Cooked hamburgers and Hotdogs and had a few margritia's!
We all kept our safe distances but had a nice time just the same. Covered porch part is coming along nicely. Should be screened in late Monday.
I got the fan & light wiring all ran over head and will do the four way box tomorrow to turn everything on/off.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Talking Re: Upgrading

Today we got half the soffit up and I got the double fan installed with remote. All the wiring has been done. I have wall mounted switches for everything.
Those little paddles move a bunch of air. The fan can be turned anyway we want it to be to blow air where we want it, I can control it with my phone also.

Re: Upgrading

When you said "got half the soffit up" I thought "is that all". I was in the siding business for quite a while. Then I saw you did the fan install, and figured your time went to that. Looking at the pictures I see you meant you installed half the ceiling and that's much more work! Yes, the material is called soffit but the soffit is the "Eaves" or area under the roof overhang. You hung half a vaulted ceiling, not too shabby! Lookin' good

Tim I'm not a contractor so the vocabulary I use is as close as I can get. We also tore out the side hand railing on the other side for new stuff. It was lower than the rest and wife wanted it changed out before new screen was installed. Plus we were working in the rain so that limited our work to under the roof for the most part.
