Re: population where you live?

Just shy of 8,000 here, officially 7,923 according to 2019 census. Used to be a bit bigger, nearly 8,500 but like most small towns now days it's hard to hold the younger people and give then good jobs for a decent living.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Airy,_Maryland

If Mt. Airy, about 5 miles away, has a pop. of 9,452 ('18), then it was probably about 3,000 when I moved here in '86. What we call the actual town has a population of around 1,000. That includes Ridgeville and Dorseytown. Same thing, housing developments took over the town, mostly in the '90s. The junction down the road is Harrisville and was once a small village and my community is West Falls. The church a couple doors down and a road just past it are named after that. They just paved Old west Falls Rd last year. Where I live it hasn't changed and I like that!

County is just over 6k. 2/3 of them live in the county seat. We have 2 stoplights. One on each side of the court house. I think about 1/3 are part time residents.

The city here is 5.5 sq miles and has over 30k residents and going up.

Just got back from working on my folks cabin. The town is 14.5 sq miles and 3,800 residents and trending down.

No wonder I can work up there for a couple of weeks in 95+ deg heat and hate coming home to 75 deg weather and being lazy..

Temple City. Yeah. I know exactly what you're talking about. I've seen some crazy stuff in Temple City. It's a very nice town. But it's "crowded"

I was at the Carl's Jr. on Las Tunas eating lunch and someone rear ended the car in front of them in the drive thru. It was entertaining.

Re: population where you live?

My nearest town with things you need is 35 miles away with a population of 12000. There is a town eleven miles away with only a gas station with a population of 8. The township I live in and a township is thirty six miles square has eight places.Pretty rural but I do what I want when I want and there ain’t nobody looking.

Re: population where you live?

My town is around 9500 people. This year they opened the first "chain" store in town, a Dollar General. People were very upset, but could do nothing due to the way the zoning regulations were written. They are working on rewriting them presently.
I grew up in a city of about 100,000 about 20 minutes away. Crazy place to live now. Unregistered cars, quads & dirt bikes on city streets, shootings every day...Amazing the difference 20 minute drive can make.

Same here in Nampa ,,there were lots of farm growing fields near me and now are all gone to housing.. I do not blame Californians for moving away from such high taxes and all ,,and I have met some of them ,,and they all are just getting away from a state that the Taxes are sky high and here in Idaho they are able to retire and have a little $$ left over . Of course there are other reasons that I wont bring up on this site ,,as for the wife and me ,,she wanted a dryer climate for her Ra.. we moved from the coast of Oregon .in 2012 . and I was a resident in Weiser with my folks as a young boy . I still like it here ,, I got relatives in Idaho Falls ,Meridian ,Weaser and here in Nampa .

Re: population where you live?

I am in the second largest city in Mississippi, Gulfport. Population is around 72K. It is hard to tell where the city ends and stops east-west wise as the 3 coastal counties are like butted together. If you don't see the signs, you won't know you left one place in our county and start the next. The other 3 of the 4 Harrison County cites add about another 60-65K. You can tell the county lines as there is a bridge over the water ways that connect the counties.

I wonder if "High density affordable housing" is going to be that desirable for people now with the pandemic. Those sort of places seemed to be hit harder. People might be adding that to their want or dont want when buying a home.

I would think twice about moving to a crowded area at this time. Especially if I had young children.

The house next door to me is a vacation home. I've maybe seen the guy there once in 3 years. Now he's there all the time. So it obviously has had an effect.

Re: population where you live?

The nearest town is about 16 miles away and has about 150 people. There's a bar, gas station, PO, and school.

The county seat is about 26 miles away and 2K people and you can actually buy some things there. A real city (~100K) is 60+ miles away by mostly paved roads. There is another way that is closer if you want to drive 35 miles of dirt and gravel. It's so rough that it takes just as long and doesn't even save much gas.

Our mailing address is in one county but we live in another county which keeps people confused.

The town I live in has a population of 3400.
Now by my cabin where I would like to be living there is a village of 189 about 4 miles away, but there is no longer a store or gas station. Although they do have a post office. The closest you can buy anything is about 13 miles away & has a population of about 2000

Then there's the Summer tourist population makes it worse than NY Combine all the different states visiting, types of driving attitude today makes Summer here completely suck

Having grown up in the "city" I do to. It is quite rural though. These are not the real numbers but it is as if 80% of the people live on 20% of the land. The Ct. river valley and the Northeast and Northwest corners are quite rural. New Haven which is about 45 minutes from me had 4 shootings (2 dead) on Wednesday.
Bulletts and bodies in all the cities. But no protests against the carnage. I'll stop there.

It's great if you're older. But I feel for the kids up here. They must be so bored. There's nothing to do.

I grew up in the suburbs of L.A. and I thought that was boring. We would drive to the Sunset Strip and hit the clubs. The Whiskey a Go Go, The Rainbow. I was underage (about 18) but I had a really good fake ID. (I knew a guy that knew a guy) It cost a me a lot.of money But it worked.

I don't think you could get away with that today. I'm sure you couldn't.

Or we would go to Venice Beach. Get stoned and look at the craziness. Anything for a little excitement. We were young and I'm lucky I survived because it got a little crazy at times. But that was what we were looking for.

I could seriously write a book about the insanity of my early years. Funny thing is that I would always go to work the next day no matter what. I would never call in sick despite how trashed I was from the night before. It was the price that I had to pay.

You couldn't pay me to put up with that nonsense now.

It is funny, I feel quite the opposite of where I am now. Growing up in a town of about 130 and the closest town was under 1K, everything seemed big to me. But after living in DC and Northern Japan (very rural but the small town was still 39K), the 72 K in our local area seems rather small. I enjoy the sound of where many of you are, but my wife refuses to move to a town like she grew up in (about 1200). She said to many nosy neighbors.

It does feel small when I head back home and stay with my sister in Pittsburgh or going to Wichita to vist my daughter. 72K then seems really small.
