Re: Brake pads question

Get a good grade of pad- they'll last longer. The 'cardboard line' from any of the local parts shops will be dirty, noisy and wear quickly. If figure a good set of pads is cheaper than using someone else's car to stop with. Plus, why do brake work when you can avoid it. Doing it right, the first time, saves a lot of headache down the road. That's just my experience and opinion.

Re: Brake pads question

Since I will need new rotors along with the pads, I was planning on going with ceramic pads for the front. Probably overkill, but I will be towing/hauling with this truck, and I get a good price where I work. I wouldn't recommend anything less than semi-metallic, as the organic pads don't last as long, or brake as hard.

Re: Brake pads question

Organic wear to fast and squeal, semi-metallic wear slower but will still squeal and due to the metal rotor with semi-metallic pad it magnetizes the metal dust particles which then the dust accumulates on rims and other parts discoloring them. I use carbon ceramic, far less brake noise, last longest and grip the best with less rotor wear.

Re: Brake pads question

I use genuine GM pads. They are the best combination of wear and life I have found. I think the p/n was 18043837 but it looks like it has been superceeded again.

Re: Brake pads question

OE composition pads will function in a most satisfactory way- GM spent a whole lotta money to figure out what works best. Proper installation will reduce or eliminate noise- just slapping pads on, without cleaning the area or using proper lubrication on contact surfaces (anti-seize is not brake lube!) will guarantee problems. OE quality rotors (OE configuration and material) will also produce the best results. Don't forget proper adjustment and lubricator of wheel bearings- that affects proper brake operation, too. GM Paul is right-thinking; using the highest quality pad material is cheap insurance against problems and disappointments. After working in and managing shops for many years, I found the best quality components had the best results- no come-backs, no customer complaints, better service life- overall, the best value for all involved.

Re: Brake pads question

Only a rich cat can afford to keep replacing cheap parts. You get what you pay for. Get the highest quality brake parts you can afford.

Re: Brake pads question

If you are a box store sorta guy..Buy the lifetime pads (+$3) then when they are gone return them for a free set. My son's truck used 3 sets averaging a set in a year on his work driver we bought thru Autozone. Imagine O'Rielly's are the same deal.

Re: Brake pads question

What year is your truck?

The three part numbers I would recommend are SC52 ($29.99), C52 ($45.99), or QC52 ($51.99). All are from Oreillys, The first two are house brand ceramic, and the QC52 is Wagner ThermoQuiet.

These are the ones that will fit my '71 C20.
