Not a gimmick. It is an old school tool. I think my dad bought his in the late 50's. It however takes a bit of practice to get reasonable readings with it. As the new gasoline formulations have made it difficult to read spark plugs reliably it may to affect how well this tool works. Price wise it is much cheaper than a wide band A/F monitor. But less accurate. And harder to get a reading from at 100 MPH.

Yeah, I could see how the 100 MPH check might be a bit tenuous! Thanks for the feedback.

No, Not a gimick but not to practical either, if your driving your truck in a normal fashion. If you ran your truck very hard don the quarter mile and inspected the spark plug emeadiatly afterwards it would give you a specific idea how its tuned . but for a daily driver used through a range of loads and rpm's , you would be chasing your tail trying to rely on it to get an overall general idea on how your vehicle is tuned or how to tune it

At $90, you could get 3 high-end Vacuum Gauges -- but you'll only need one. That leaves about 60 bucks for beer.
In theory, it should work, but seeing the spark blast color would limit you to tuning at night or in a darkened, closed garage [not a good idea due to CO.]
