Vent Window Rebuild or Replace

I have heard that the aftermarket, (Goodmark) vent windows leak air or whistle after being installed.

I have rebuilt a pair of 55 vent windows and also know that it is not very easy.

Does anyone have any feedback regarding rebuilding verus new?
I have not looked yet, but is one rebuild kit better than another?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Vent Window Rebuild or Replace

I just rebuilt one the other day. It went good, only had a little bit of a challange with the rivits on the straight rubber piece.

There was another post some time ago that recommended not drilling out the pivot rivit and drilling out the rivit in the channel instead. I decided to drill the pivot and replace it with a stainless screw and nylock nut. The whole project went off fairly well.

All said and done, I was out about $40 for the pair. That is a hell of a lot cheaper than the new/rebuilt ones that I have seen for sale.

Tim christian sells the rebuild parts and new rivets with the tool to do it very reasonable. Parts are very hi-quality and tim is great to work with. Fyi

Replace the rubber. Use pop rivets instead of the original style.. Easy job.

Re: Vent Window Rebuild or Replace

Actually all the vent windows made are from Counterparts. Goodmark and all the other Sellers including us do not make them. The biggest complaint we have is that if not waxed often enough. The chrome rusts real fast. At least here on the coast. Maybe not in a dry climate. I personally like rebuilding them and rechroming.
We retail and wholesale everything needed to rebuild Vent windows even a quality rivet tool. See pics. Need the rivets we will sell you one or 1000 We are the least expensive in the USA for window parts

Re: Vent Window Rebuild or Replace

We used counter parts rubber on one set, fit like crap. Had to redo, next time we got rubber from Classic Parts of America and they fit fine, we're finding not all rubber pieces are created equal, check with the board members who sell here, they know what brands work too. Too much of a pain to do twice.

Re: Vent Window Rebuild or Replace

There is a step by step in the forum FAQs. Did mine and it was pretty easy. If you drill out every rivet it makes it much easier, you just have to keep the frame straight, it will bend easily.

Re: Vent Window Rebuild or Replace

Rebuilding them is easy, as mentioned before, remove all the rivets, it makes the job much easier. I learned that it helps alot to lube the rubber that pops into the frame, the first time I rebuilt a pair I didn't think to lube the rubber and it was a pain in the anus! If you take your time they will look just as good as new. I used a rivet gun for the pivot.

Re: Vent Window Rebuild or Replace

Easier to remove the bracket that the pivot attaches to, rather than the pivot rivet itself. The two rivets attaching the bracket can be drilled and replaced with pop rivets.

Re: Vent Window Rebuild or Replace

Last week I saw this thread and skimmed it thinking it might come in handy and sure enough. I got one side done today, and the other has a rusted channel. I'll buy a used and rebuild it before I pay $200 for a new one.

Re: Vent Window Rebuild or Replace

I personally had bad luck in rebuilding my wing vents.
Kicked myself for not just nutting up and buying a whole new set.
