Re: Junkyard rescue

I had our weld inspector at work bring his sonic tester and jelly to make sure the weld was perfect. I've been doing this 30 years now and know while I'm welding if the weld is perfect or not. These welds passed as I knew they would.

This is not like others with zig zagged cuts with fish plates. Mines just a good full penn weld. This is all that is needed.

Re: Junkyard rescue

I would still put a plate in there. my experience with welding is, that its not the weld you should be concerned with, but the material on each side of it. just my .02

Looks nice, thanks.

Also, my opinion is that if you make the patch behind where the rear suspension cross-member is located (like you did), it suffers less stress.

Re: Junkyard rescue

Some great work you have done. I have a '72 gmc c20 identical to yours and want to do the same. Get it sound and safe and leave the history. do you have any more info on the cab repairs you made? how did you paint the repair panels to match the truck?

Re: Junkyard rescue

I bought spray cans of the correct 514 light red paint, but didn't use them. I discovered that Chevrolet red-orange engine paint is an exact match. I used the engine paint on the rockers and cab corners. Cheap and easy to get at any auto parts store.

Re: Junkyard rescue

The truck is done. Everything works 100% like it did when new. From the high beams to the backup lights, and from the dome light to the cigarette lighter light. I am ready for my state inspection to go from junk title to rebuilt title.

Re: Junkyard rescue

Thanks guys. I drove it around town for about 30 minutes today. I even got offered $1000 for it. I declined since I have about $3500 in it, plus my time.

Re: Junkyard rescue

Yeah $1000 is a little ridiculous. I wouldn't take less than 6 and a half for that truck. I am absolutely blown away by what you did by the way! It is amazing

I'm guessing the number on the truck is "priceless" at this point
Amazing work!
