Inline 6 questions

Hi all, I know I haven't been on the forums recently. I haven't been able to work on my '70 very much this summer. Now that things are starting to slow down, I'm getting time to work on it.
My first question is: I put installed the engine/transmission as a whole. I got the transmission mount bolts to line up and have it loosely bolted to the frame. I'm having a hard time getting the motor mounts to line up though. I've tried lifting the engine up with a hoist and trying to slide the engine slightly, but it won't move.

Second question: being a 1970, my truck originally came with a linkage operated carburetor. I have replaced that engine with one from a newer vehicle. I believe it is a 1979 block. The carburetor on this engine is cable operated. I have an accelerator from a parts truck that was '71-72, but I don't have the cable to go to it, nor do I know how the cable should be routed. Does anyone on here have a '71-72 with the inline 6 that could give me some advice?

Re: Inline 6 questions

I can't speak for the cable routing, but I think you'll also need a new gas pedal assembly

>> I believe it is a 1979 block.<<

The '79 250 was the Pulsair 4.1 engine with integrated intake manifold.
If that is the engine you have, this would be a good time to replace the head or find a pre-'79 250 engine or a 292 engine.

Converting to the swing mounted pedal with cable is best done with the engine out. You will need to weld up some old holes, drill new holes and tack weld some nuts on the outside.

Re. the engine to motor mounts lining up: try loosening all the mount bracket bolts to see if it buys you anything. I've encountered this problem on a v8 and loosening the bolts helps.

On the throttle link problem. A pic would help to see what you have. I have found that when mixing up new and late year parts on these trucks, a lot of times you have to resort to either after market or making your own brackets, etc.

Re: Inline 6 questions

Olblue70, I found this old post that may help you with the throttle linkage.

That is exactly how this engine is set up! The bracket is already installed on the engine. I just don't know where to get the cable that's already the right length for a '71-72 truck.

As for the motor mounts, I will try to loosen them up and see if that helps.

If you can't find it in salvage yards you can place an ad in the "want to buy" section of this site or call some of the vendors to see if they even make it or have one that is similar then customize it yourself. I've done that in the past.

Re: Inline 6 questions

Summit has a selection. Highly recommend running a piece or wire along the proposed route, then measure both the sheath and cable length. If needed you can buy Morse type cables and custom cut them - Lokar comes to mind.
