I have a Arizona 1972 Chevrolet Suburban 3 Door 4WD as rust free as you could ask for and I want to do a frame off restoration and when I go back I want to go with a Big Block. Is it going to take alot of modifications in the engine bay ? Anyone out there that has completed or helped in a Big Block
installation please help with any information or advice you have ...

I don't think it is a lot of work....I think you would have to change the engine towers to BB.
I'm sure others will chime in too....

We have a 72 GMC 4wd burb and my dad put a big block in it. He had to move the motor mts, tranny mts and transfer case mts all forward. We had to have both drivelines remade also. Was alot of work but I'd say its worth it.

I have done several big block conversions on 4X4's, There are a number of ways to go.. You can use the stock small block engine mounting crossmember.

If you leave the engine in the stock small block location the pass valve cover will hit the firewall, and if you use an HEI distributor it will also hit the firewall.. on this configuration you would either need to massage the firewall for both or use a body lift.. this is the easiest method.

You can move it all forward 2-3 inches, drill holes for the engine mount crossmember, drill the holes for the transfer case crossmember, move the AT trans linkage forward, then modify the transfer case shifter, shorten the front driveshaft and had a new rear one built. then for a fan shroud use a stock V8 2WD one, This way is the most work.

OR.. you use a T-700R4 overdrive trans which is longer than a T-350. then you can leave the transfer case and the rest of the drivetrain in the stock location. which means no driveshaft mods,shifter mods etc.. all you would need to do is move the engine mount crossmember forward, drill the holes, use a factory 2WD fan shroud and bolt it all up.. to me this is the prefered method..

way I go but I like the last choice with the T 700R and just move the motor mounts forward.... I will for sure be back with more questions as I get a little
closer.. thanks again...
