How to find new alternator?

So my 68 gmc originally had a 327. The previous owner swapped in a 350. I need to buy a new alternator. How do I make sure I get the correct alternator at the parts store without bringing my alternator and putting it on the counter since this is my only vehicle.

Re: How to find new alternator?

I usually go to O'Rielly's website and check the parts for both engines. When you look up a part they have a compatibility tab that can be selected and it will tell what engines a part will fit.

Re: How to find new alternator?

A pic of your alternator and engine setup would help (front and back). Here's a good article on id'ing them.

Re: How to find new alternator?

I agree...charge the battery fully and drive there...its 2 bolts, change it in the parking lot .at least then when you get the defective one you can try another...or put in a regulator when it still doesn't charge....most parts houses cant look up the right one even when you're holding it

Re: How to find new alternator?

Unless you just have to have stock, take this opportunity to swap to a later integrated regulator version alternator and ditch the old mechanical regulator. There is tons of info on this swap. You could also swap to an even later CS144 (stay away from CS130). There is much info on that swap too.
