Big Gas Tank

Is the larger fuel tank that was an option on these Subs made out of stamped sheet metal like the standard tank or was it one of the heavy gauge, welded type of tank like the auxilliary tanks on the trucks?

Bob

I have that tank on my K20 (installed by PO). Must hold close to 50 gals.

BobS, you say that tank was a factory option? If were talking about the same tank, I can't believe it was an option since bolting through the floor vice to the frame is cheezy. I also think it is a rearend crash hazard since the back of the tank reaches nearly to the rear bumper.

My K10 burb has a factory stamped steel 24 gal tank.

The big, bolt-thru-the-floor tank in my K20 also has a recess for the burb frame crossmember that often carries the expansion vapor lines. So it tucks up against the plywood floor which gives it its big capacity. It also has a rear bottom that slopes upward towards the bumper for some departure angle clearance. I've thought of having it thoroughly cleaned out by a radiator shop and then weld on brackets to affix it to the frame and also add a skid plate, but I can't get past that much fuel that's probably unbaffled (don't know) and too close to the rear bumper to not burst in a collision.

I think they were an old aftermarket tank offering, but that's just a guess. I saw one for sale just once in the last decade or more. I'd take a pic of mine if I had a digicam.

yes im sure its factory sending unit and all it is to well constructed to be anything else they call it a "40" gal but must b closer to 50 it has a trough through center to go over frame member and if you get hit hard enough by any lesser grade vehicle you will have more pressing concerns than fire like halo adjustment 101 and beginers harp

I've got one of these 50 gal tanks on my 71 burb. I'm not sure how big it is, it is way to scarey to fill it up at $2.50/gal. I'm pretty sure it is factory. I'll have to check my 71 owners manual, but I think I saw it in there as an option.

I have one of the huge welded underfloor tanks in my 72 C20 burb(bigblock truck). The 72 C10 burb I got from Cheesewagon did have 2 tanks in it but it only has the one stock tank now. Both fillernecks are still there as are the blocks of wood with the rubber insulators that the tank mounted to.

I still would be surprised to see that this tank was factory. It is mounted to a wood floor, after all. I can't believe GM would even consider such mounting. Maybe a dealer option? Certainly aftermarket.

I'm open to correction.

Doh! Why didn't I think of that?

I'll check my K20 glove box sticker, as well. Pretty sure the burb is all original, save some carb & ac mods.

Remember, the lwb pickups had "through the wood" bed mounting too, so not that far a stretch for our burbs.

I have one of the large "through the wood" tanks on my '71 Burb. It holds about 45 gallons.

I have a few pics on my work hard drive that sorta show it.

I have one of the large bolt thru tanks that was on my first 72 blazer, it is made by Areo tank co. and they still make them. The new version has brackets welded on the sides.

I had thought that it was a factory option but it could have been dealer-installed. I remember GMC Pauls having them for sale along with the correct sending units with a resistor to make the guage read correctly. Has anyone found it listed as an RPO on the glovebox sticker? I'm sure I've seen it listed as a factory option somewhere because the "40 gallon" part stuck out as different from what the pickups had.

fde2blk, I'd appreciate the sketch and some pics if you can get them.

Bob

I have a larger than normal tank. It is a custom welded tank goes from the rearend all the way to the back bupmer and from the top of the bottom side of the wood floorboard to about 8 inches below the frame rails. I will have to take a pic. I am sure it is in the 30-40 gallon range.

Finally looked at my K20 burb's glove box sticker. No fuel tank listed.

It does have "no spin" diff listed, but I've spun one tire before, so I guess I got screwed out of a NoSpin Detroit by a PO. Gotta check just for hope's sake.

My 71 K10 burb has a huge welded tank that goes from the bumper to the stock tank.. it fills via the stock filler neck that was "Y" ed.. so you never know which one fills first.. it has a stock looking switch on the left side of the dash to switch the guage from tank to tank with a manual lever next to the seat.. Always thought it was an aftermarket... Hmmmmmmmmm.... anybody else have any ideas?? or RPO numbers?

I have almost the exact setup. The only thing I don't have is the switch for the gas gauge. Have the big welded tank and the slector switch by the seat, y-filler and all of that. I figured that a P.O. had made it and installed it, but now I think that it may have been a dealer option.

Holds about 40 gallons between the two tanks.

Well, we may not be getting any closer to what the factory offered besides 24gal tanks, but we've learned of dealer/aftermarket offerings that I, at least, did not know of besides saddle tanks and my tank like what Beast388 posted pics of.
