Does mileage stay with cluster or does it come from the PCM?

I've got a chance to buy a '01 2500 for the engine & trans for a swap. I was told the truck had 158K on it but the cluster had been swapped with another vehicle therefore it showed higher mileage. Is the guy pulling my leg?

Thanks

Re: Does mileage stay with cluster or does it come from the PCM?

cluster stores mileage in RAM temporarily. Actual mileage in on the PCM.

Mine was off by about 3500 miles...
Didn't worry about it. Don't think it ever reset.
