I just took apart the entire assembly of the rear hitch spare tire crap under my truck ,if you were in the area I would give you all of it heh. Dropped the spare and all.

It's basically just 2 long bolts that slide into a flat bar, they are held by the frame.

That's the one! Had to cut the bolts out. Custom fuel tank going there!

too bad you chopped up the hardware. some of it is unique and typically not available through vendors or Ace hardware stores.

Re: rear hitch spare tire holder

I think what is on his mind is a tire carrier made to mount in a 2" receiver. This is a K/5, no under body tire carrier where the gas tank is

Yep however I am building a 72 the way I want it.The original location of the fuel tanks is stupid in every way of engineering and extremely unsafe.

Custom fuel tank and class V hitch going around it is far better use of space than for a spare.

That's your opinion. An opinion with no facts behind it. These trucks have superior engineering through and through, which is why they are still great daily drivers today. The proof is in the pudding. Hundreds of thousands of these trucks, as well as years prior, with tank in same location. Where are the stats to back up the unsafe position of the tank? Can't base it on a 40+ year old corroded tank, either. A leaking tank placed anywhere in the vehicle is unsafe. When we choose to drive 40+ year old vehicles we choose to either put them back to proper condition or take our chances.

Re: rear hitch spare tire holder

Gary,

I too have a Four Wheel Camper on my Blazer. I was also stumped as to how I would carry my spare tire, as I don't even have a front mounted spare carrier. I initially used a hitch mounted spare carrier made by Reese, but it ended up being a PITA because I had to remove it to open the camper rear door, and it prevented me from hauling my trailer/boat/etc, because the receiver was being used.

I considered modifying the fiberglass half top and rear of camper so I could slide it forward enough to mount my tailgate and use my old swing-away tire carrier. But I didn't want to screw up the camper. So I ended up fabricating a mount for the swing away carrier to attach to, in lieu of the tailgate mounting point. It allows me to use the swing away tire carrier, open the camper door, and keep the hitch available for towing. I did have to make a small cutout in my rear bumper to install the new mounting point, but the new mount is totally removable from the vertically mounted 2" receiver hitch I welded to the frame rail behind the bumper. I also had to make minor modifications to the swing away carrier to make the connection point line up with the frame mounted mount I fabricated. As added precaution to prevent slop between the mount insert and the vertical 2" receiver, I drilled two holes on adjacent sides of the receiver, welded on 3/4" grade 8 nuts, and tighten the two grade 8 bolts through the holes until them are tight against the insert. I will get pictures soon. I am at work and my Blazer is out in then parking lot. Pictures will make more sense.

They were recalled for fuel tanks catching on fire in a side impact collision.
The tank behind the seat is yes IMO ****ing stupid.

I prefer the look of classics with some modern updates so yes I bought my truck so it's what I do with it, do with yours as you please. Take your "pudding" and give it to somebody else.

Thanos,
FYI; That recall was for the 1973-87 trucks with the side saddle fuel tanks, not for the cab-mounted tanks in the 67-72 trucks.

Shouldn't matter. You have to move the mounting spar on the rack to line up with the new mounting post. However, the longer rack will put the weight of the tire farther away from the new mounting post position and may cause flexing. If you rack is long enough to span the rear door opening, locate the new mounting post on the hinge side of the door instead.

BTW, I retained the original mounting spar on my rack so it can still be used when I remove the camper and replace the tailgate.
