Re: Internet sayings you know are coming and are sick of hearing.

The word "patina" makes me cringe. It reminds me of the "rat rod" phrase from years ago when someone tried to sell some hunk of junk and acted like rust was actually desirable.

Guessing that's directed at me? Didn't mean to hit a nerve. I figured it applied to the "internet saying I was sick of hearing." I literally see it every day on craigslist and I'm pretty sick of it.

Nope, not at all. I completely agree with you. Sadly patina has become about selling garbage and not survivors. Just like rat rod became about building unsafe death traps. There are exceptions to the rule and the original meanings of these terms are still valid, it’s just the followers that are after the money have ruined it.

I’ll delete my other comment. I shouldn’t have posted such an open ended statement.

Re: Internet sayings you know are coming and are sick of hearing.

I'll keep this simple to avoid any misinterpretation.. First is the word 'trending'. Is it a word at all? I don't recall learning the word trend being a verb. The other is 'hash tag'. Use either of these two terms born of the internet and you will have absolutely turned me off. Both indicate mindlessness to me. '#' is not a hash tag, or who decided to make it something it never was? It is an already established symbol used to indicate 'number' prior to the numerical digit and also used to indicate 'pound(s)' when used after a numerical digit. Maybe the official name for the symbol is hash tag, but I never knew it and neither do the automated phone programs who refer to it as the 'pound symbol'.

Here are a couple of fun ones:

"....okay look, I'll be honest with ya'...." (what?...where does that leave the prior conversation?....lol

or here is another one:

"....Old school...." (...which now appears to cover just about everything that wasn't made within the last 10 years, lol)

All good

since its internet sayings, I will say the single word posts that say "this". as if everyone will say "thanks for your agreement".

the first type is the guy who has been looking for a while, knows the market, and knows a good deal when he sees it. the asking price is below what he is willing to pay or close enough that negotiation will get him there, and so he sends a note "if it looks the same in person, I'll take it". nine times out of ten the deal closes.

the second is the guy who sees the asking price as a starting point for negotiation. he may know the market but wouldnt know a good buy if it ran out on him (goodBYE). he sends a 1/2 price offer, without looking in person, and even if its accepted he shows up and picks it apart trying for more discount, if he shows up at all. if the offer isnt accepted he whines and bellyaches about what its going to cost to fix it up. I hang up on those guys. I dont block them, instead I save their number in my phone so I know not to waste my time in the future.

Re: Internet sayings you know are coming and are sick of hearing.

The ones who like to use "It is what it is" seem to also like to use "Yada yada yada". I hate that. What did you just say? Are you ok? Have a lapse in mind function? I feel like telling these people, "You know, if you don't have anything to say it's ok to just stay quiet. You'll seem more intelligent that way"

As heard on the current Chevy Truck ad I have to hear every morning in order to hear the local weather forecast by my local TV station. I hate the Chevy ad campaign.

Ah yes, sports metaphors.

Similar, but even worse..."crushed it". Usually used when nobody "crushed" anything at all. I think you could bunt a guy over to second(metaphorically) and somebody would come running out and say, "'You really crushed it!", while being dead serious.

No, theres one out and we still need another hit to score a run. If I had crushed it, he and I would've both scored and there would still be no one out.

And the standard for excellence continues it's nosedive...

Congrats to the OP for starting a great thread, it's a real touchdown. And many of the responses have been slam dunks.

None of this is exclusive to the internet. The internet is a reflection of the real world and, at times it seems, the real world is a reflection of the internet... for some. Monkey see monkey do has people following trends in every way, and speech mannerisms lead the pack. It really all begins with TV. Animated behavior that mimmicks either what is seen in advertising or written into shows. It's all a study on sociology when it comes down to it. I use expressions I heard my father use and those I heard throughout my life used by people I respected or just ones I thought worked well or sounded cool. I have known people who have the knack for coining such phrases, true originators.

It's funny, my one post that contributed the two phrases I 'only hear on the internet' that annoy me simply by seeing them way overused to the point it seems like mindless impulse gets someone offended by their own interpretation of what they felt my reasoning was. How about we just post and let post and keep our little annoyances in our pocket. I figure this thread was meant to be fun. Because seriously, we don't let such small things bothers us enough to need to speak out, now do we?
