Complete Steering Column Rebuild DIY

First off, yes I realize that I'm posting in the 67-72 section with info about a 1963 MT steering column rebuild. However, as far as I know the 67 & 68 MT columns are very similar.
I've recently taken on this huge project and documented all the steps. The installation back into the truck is pending.

Maybe this will help someone recognize a part, solve a problem, or complete a full rebuild of their 67-72 column. After all, steering and brakes are the most important safety features in our trucks. Seat belts are important too.

These LINKS will take you to all of the details.

I welcome feedback. If there are major differences, please mention them.

Any automotive repair requires a certain level of common sense and skill.

I'm curious about this also, I rebuilt my 1970 column and it was not rocket science...

So how did the rebuild go? Would you do it again or just buy a new column from Ididit?

Thanks

I rebuilt the steering columns in my 1963 and 1965 C10s and have had no problems with either one. The 65 has the original style lower bearing. The 63 was upgraded the the newer style lower bearing. It’s not a difficult task. Just takes time. Many folks swap to IDIDIT or Flaming River because they switch to an AT. I have a floor shift 5 speed in both.

Yeah I have a 70's auto column and wanted to stick with it if possible. Are the auto columns harder to rebuild?

I really don’t know, but I doubt it. Maybe someone else will comment.
