Hi, Bob here....

I've just acquired this 66 GMC Suburban.
I have started the tear down. My plan is a 4x4 conversion, any suggestions are welcome.
I'd also like to switch to rear Barn doors if I can find a set.

Bob

Welcome....should make a sweet ride...
I would look for a good set of axles and drivetrain from a square body truck...I'd try to stay away from the fulltime 4x4 yrs....what engine and trans are you planning?...also your chosen tire size and axle ratios will need considered

Not sure on BB/SB yet.... Will have to see what pops up. Going old school motor (ie no LS swap). I will be using a 700r4 coupled to a NP205. Axles will depend on what I find. I'm thinking I will have to narrow what ever I come up with. Early 70's would be nice so I can use the old school bolt on hubs.

Here is a 3/4 ton 44 I narrowed a few years back using stock shafts from different axles. It was for a 48 Ford F3 I converted

Re: New Member

Sounds like this isnt your 1st rodeo....you might squeak by without having to narrow a set of axles..you can run a more positive offset wheel to counter some width...that's what I did on my 57 IH...I went with USWheels with stock style wheels...

Re: New Member

Welcome to the forum Bob Are you the one in Pocatello?

Here is the good thread on converting to a 4x4.

http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=448681

I see no need to narrow any differentials.

I may have a set of rear cargo doors (barn doors) but I'm a few hundred miles north of you.
