Re: engine fitmnet/placement and mounts

I had to give up 30 seconds in because it made me dizzy trying to watch it and you couldn't see anything because it was too close to the truck.

I think you are getting there. You should have lots of room in that 57.

Re: engine fitmnet/placement and mounts

Purpose of the video was to try and show where Im at - not sure what peoples thoughts/suggestions are.

Mainly;

* Mounts - Weld one side to the frame ? Other Side to the crossmember ?
- triangulate a mount and somehow have both come off crossmmeber
- other ?

* Height - leave where is - or raise an inch ? How to tell for example for floor shifter column so on.

* Depth - generally rule of thumb to go back as far as you can ?

* Driveline - 3 degree negative about right ?

Other tips/hints ? Just dont want to go off here ....

Keep in mind, you may not get it correct the first time. I would mount the engine mounts on the engine and use some clamps to hold the cross-member in place while you check placement. Sometime you can get it right the first time, In my case I usually move the engine 3-4 times before its right in the place I want it.

I have seen a lot of V8's in trucks and never are they all in the exact same spot. Close but they always very a little.

In my 59 I put the engine as far back and down as I could, but I also retained stock steering and crossmember, so My engine is higher and forward a little for steering access.

In your case you dont have that front cross-member and you have IFS. You could really almost put that engine any place and be good. But mocking it up will be worth the time. Check your steering shaft access and exhaust access prior to making the final position.

I'm assuming you will be running an electric fan, so your position of the engine to the radiator should not make much difference. Had you wanted to run a mechanical fan you would want it positioned as to pull air from the radiator.

So many details depending on your build.

Thanks yes will be running a mechanical fan.

If I raise the engine around 1" - it might solve my manifold clearance issue and also 100% ensure the oil pan is above the front Xmember. But IM not sure of any downside except hood clearance ?

If I move engine forward 2"-3" I might be able to get the motor mounts welded directly onto the front xmember - but then Im not sure how to tell what other issues I might create for myself.

Its the motor mounts that are MOSTLY throwing me off. But really the ramifications of going higher also on engine.

etc

If I push the engine back further - then no way motor mount can have its rear mount tab welded to the crossmmeber. So then to frame ? I havent seen anyone else have had to do this - so scratching my head a little also.

Re: engine fitmnet/placement and mounts

why are you worried about the mounts being on the frame? just the length?

I built my last set of mounts to the frame, there are no issues. the front crossmember is used to carry suspension loads, not the motor. the angle of the mounts (up to the motor) means the legs are in compression with the weight of the motor on them, thats a very hard design to break.

Re: engine fitmnet/placement and mounts

Hey joedoh
Not so much concerned they are on the frame ..... I know its been done before - just more

1) Would probably mean a small "dogear"/tab on the cross mmeber then the rear tab would be long and hook into the frame - just weird as I havent seen anyone lese build thread have to do that which makes me question

2) Overall best position/design here. Like I said I could move it forward 2" - but then I feel like I might have front clearance issues with FAN etc .....

So my welded tabs would end up something like this ............. just seems a little strange.
Could be just because using Dakota front end .....

OPtions are

1) Have at it
2) Move engine forward 2+" ... but ...

etc

Re: engine fitmnet/placement and mounts

i wouldnt move the engine forward just to make the mounts "look" better.

also, you need a rubber mount in between that plate and the frame side brackets. if you just weld legs to those sliding brackets in your video, its going to vibrate like crazy.

edit: ok you talked about a bushing, never mind that last comment then.

Re: engine fitmnet/placement and mounts

- thanks ........ then I'll move on with using a short leg on Xmember and a long leg into frame. Just wanted to check being my 1st rodeo and not seen any other builds with that positioning.
