Gear reduction starter

I bought a gear reduction starter from napa that I'm pretty sure is configured wrong for my '72 402 BB. My block has 3 starter mount holes, so I assumed either straight or staggered pattern would fit. Wrong. when the starter is on, it looks like the edge of the flywheel is about center of the armature shaft. So , I'm thinking this starter must be for a 153 tooth small flywheel and I have a 168 tooth big flywheel. Can a different block be mounted on this starter to make it work?

Re: Gear reduction starter

Why not take it back and get the right starter.

Re: Gear reduction starter

agreed .... way over thinking it .

big block should be the bigger tooth count gear . you need a staggered bolt pattern unit . straight bolt pattern units = small count .

now you say you have 3 bolt holes are we talking on the block face or cast iron bell housing were the starter bolts on ? these are 2 totally different systems .
