Whitey Gettin Old

Whitey hit 180,000 taking the son to school. I pulled off and took a pic with the phone. (Demonstrating some safe driving techniques to the son )

For me this is something. First vehicle I have ever had or driven this long to get this many miles on the original drive-train. The ole 4.3 is still running like a charm too. I must say this is the best vehicle for fun, comfort and utility I have ever owned. My son still thinks he gets it in 2 years for his. I may have to find him something else.

Re: Whitey Gettin Old

Looks good too! My z71 is up to 141k. I have the c10 and mustang to drive and over the past year i have had a work truck i drive home, and i had the s10 up until last year... so she hasnt been a true dd since 2009.

I drove it to charlotte a couple weeks ago, still a great riding/handling truck. I miss driving it. My work truck is a pos 4 banger ranger that shakes. (Rangers are good trucks but mine was beat to hell before i got it.)

My old 97 Z71 is at 200,000 miles...replaced with a 2005 4x4 last Monday. Let my son take over the Z71(which is running fine and new tires)

She looks good for an old gal Here in the rustbelt , my 02 is due for cab corners & rockers. With only 162,000 on the odo, its cheaper to fix than replace crazyL

It looks good Bill. Knowing the history of the truck you might need to consider handing it down to the son. I'm just saying.

Re: Whitey Gettin Old

Well, lets bring a dead horse to the surface again. My son and I split duty with this truck and my 07 Silverado WT, but I still have a overall liking of Whitey's look better than the 07.

Well bad happened this weekend. The ole 4.3 blew a head gasket BADly. Looks like It cracked a head, piston & bent a couple valves. Only 205K. I was so up in the air on what to do. I have owned this truck for over 8 years, longest I have owned any vehicle. I did not what to get rid of such a solid/clean truck, but worried about the cost replacing the V6. Had it been the 5.3, new motor for sure. Well after talk to some friends and connections, decided Whitey will get a new(er) heart. Got a good lower mileage engine coming in from Houston, so hopefully with in few weeks she will ride again.

On yeah, Boog the boy likes it and plans on taking it to college next year. I'll probably keep the 07 cause it has the V8, but oh the ties to Whitey go deep.

Re: Whitey Gettin Old

Is it possible that someone was hot rodding that old high mileage six?

In all seriousness, was the coolant ever changed? Dexcool starts to become corrosive after 5 years. If you never changed it, and the owners before never did, that could have helped contribute.

Jesse, had it been my daughter...yes racing, or attempting to race...Yes that would be prime, probably candidate. My son, if a therm o-nuclear warhead missile was chasing him from behind, he would still NOT exceed that posted speed limit...Period. Makes me wonder if he is our child since everyone one else has a foot beyond lead. An no Jesse, I flushed the DEXCOOL out 6-7 years ago and went with good stuff.

I found out today I think the main cause that could have started the problem, the clutch fan had frozen and the fan was not moving. So we think it caused it to over heat and blew the head gasket.

That sucks a $30 part killed a good motor

Since it's "his" truck now great time to teach him a ton of stuff with the engine swap.

Re: Whitey Gettin Old

I have been slowly getting him into the mechanics of things, although he is not his dad. Trucks/cars isn't his thing.

I have a mechanic friend doing the swap for me as my work/teaching schedule is killing me right now. It would take me way to long to get thru the swap, even with my son's help.

Re: Whitey Gettin Old

That's one of the reason's I haven't pulled the still running smokebox out of the 67 yet. I know that when I pull it apart for the crate engine swap... it might be 6 months to a year before it moves again.

Re: Whitey Gettin Old

Still waiting. 1 engine had a timing/code throwing issue, 2nd engine came out of something strange. Waiting on #3 to arrive (only 111K). It was in a running Silverado as of Friday. Should be here Monday and get back to work once my friend is back from vacation.

So looking forward to having something with AC again. It is HOT in the south.

Re: Whitey Gettin Old

Whitey is finally home again. It only took 3 tries to find a decent engine, but Ole whitey is cruising again.

Nothing special, but cleaner than before. the new heart with only 107K on it. Had to put a new spider assembly and a few other parts on while we were at it. The boy is happy and I am happy to have an AC truck back for usage.

Missed the update! Nice!

Since I don't have my 00 Z71 anymore I don't frequent this section much. I do miss the old girl. Love the 2015, but you can't just forget about 11 years of awesome.

THREE motors? Argh. Hopefully not all on your dime?

Re: Whitey Gettin Old

The lifespan on these things would just bewilder car guys from 40 years ago. We talk about how we miss things like greasable bushings and service-inspections for wear parts, yet we drive trucks that we never think twice about, until 250-325k miles on mostly factory parts.

My neighbor likes to brag bout how his old Toyota trucks used to be the only cars reliable to 200k+ all day long...yet now, we've got loaded Escalades doing that (just with a few less working electronics lol).

That's awesome glad to hear it's up and running again with a new heart beat. Old trucks that we are attached to just can't even come close to comparing to buying a new one never will.

Glad to hear she is back on the road. Also nice to see you kept the 4.3 so many just think all trucks need a V8. If just using a truck for transportation and yardwork without heavy towing or mountain use the 4.3 is plenty of power.

I agree. If my 07 would have been a 4.3 like this one, I would still be the primary driver of Whitey. The son does NOT get the V8 while dad drives the V6, especially since I paid for both

My daughter drives an 08 Z71 extended cad 4x4 but she also paid for it and pays all expenses except dad does provide labor for repairs free. She pays my cost for parts.
I would not trade my 98 rcsb for it as it drives like a tank compared to mine.

My '99 daily driver just turned 266,000K on its 4.8 V8.
Best vehicle I have ever owned for comfort, reliablity and fun.
A few hiccups and burps and normal understandable repairs.
We can all agree they are generally a great truck.

Re: Whitey Gettin Old

Welllllllll................. Came to the conclusion I liked Whitey better than the 07 model I bought so my son could have Whitey. Well son and I talked, instead of him driving the 07 Silverado, he was thinking a car would be better for him to travel the 4.5 hrs to and from school. So sold the 07, got back my Whitey and picked up the son a nice Accord.

It felt good to be back home behind the wheel of ole Whitey. Felt so good did a cleanup of the old guy. 203,800 miles. Hopefully another 100K or so before I have to debate losing it again.
