What muffler

I know a thread like this can get out of hand with everyone having different opinions and likes/dislikes, but I will try to describe what I'm looking for specifically. I am getting to the point where I am about to start my 5.3 for the first time and would like to go ahead and get the mufflers on so not to anger the neighbors. I'm looking for something to give me a nice mellow growl/purr. I want to be able to cruise around without having to yell to talk to someone in the passenger seat. I have tried to listen to youtube clips but the sound quality is never that great, and I am not around enough different trucks to get an idea of what mufflers to use. I did hear a truck go by the other day that sounded great, but I couldn't flag him down in time, and he probably would have thought I was a crazy person. I'm hoping to find some that won't break the bank as well. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Re: What muffler

I have Cherry Bomb Welded Turbos, love them, real nice sound and a little loud when at WOT too. BTW, It really isnt that loud with open headers and they will forgive you eventually

Re: What muffler

I always like Dynomax super turbos. Idle and drive nice with more noise up high. The Flowmaster 2 chamber guys always think they are too quiet. The 3 chambers are quieter but I don't like that hollow sound. I had a Gale Banks catback on my 06 HEMI and it sounded friggin great, I just don't know how they sound on chevy engines. I can tell you for sure that Magnaflow is going to be louder than you want...had one for three days and had the muffler shop take it back off. Hope that helps.

Re: What muffler

Well I have had a different experience with Magnaflows. I am running one big one behind my 6.0. It is very quiet at idle and cruise but really wakes up at high RPMs. I am running Cats.

This setup is similar to the stock setup on SSRs, what my 6.0 came out of. Sorry for the poor pics. Muffler is mounted behind the cab, side saddle. 2-1/2in pipes.

Re: What muffler

Thanks for the input guys! I looked up the price on those Cherry Bombs and I think it would be at least worth trying. I could get two for around $50. With all the other expenses I have on this project right now that price is right. At that cost I could always swap them out down the road if it's not the sound I'm looking for. Since I don't have cats I wonder how loud the Flowmasters would be. I guess if I have to try a few till i find the right sound, it's only money, I can make more...

Re: What muffler

I picked up a pair of 3" turbo mufflers. Bought Summits as they were the cheapest.

Re: What muffler

I put dual 2" thrush glasspacks with no crossover behind the 4.8 in my '67. I have the tailpipes turned out just in front of the rear wheels. Has just a little rumble at idle and accelerating, and gets pretty loud under WOT, but they don't drone or fight conversation at highway speeds. Plus it still sounds like a nice old truck, I can't tell you how many times i have been asked if it is the original 283 or 327 when I pull in and park somewhere. The looks on people's faces are priceless when I tell them that its a 4.8 V-8 out of an '02 silverado and pop the hood to prove it.
