Re: What trans cooler

I purchased one recently, as I will be changing out the torque convertor. I went with a Derale stack plate design cooler. They are reported to cool much better than the other types and are stronger than the others as well. http://derale.com/products/fluid-coo...3-271253202964 Sorry I have no photos as I haven't installed it yet, and it will go in line with the cooler in my radiator.

Re: What trans cooler

I bought a B&M 70264 and havent installed it yet but it had very good reviews from the camaro drag racers. it is a stacked plate design which has a lot more cooling surface area than a fin type, and it has a thermostatic orifice to allow the trans fluid to warm up properly. I bought it from amazon.

Re: What trans cooler

Im using the B&M 70273 model - its rated at 15,000 GVW and 15,000 BTU which is way more than any light duty truck needs.

I like that it a fin style cooler and has the 1/2" NPT fitting so I can use my own fittings (AN Type) instead of just the hose and clamp dealio.... they tend to slip off and you got red fluid EVERYWHERE!

This one is about $75

Re: What trans cooler

I talked in depth with a tech at PATC when I rebuilt the 700R4 in my K10. The consensus was that there's no replacing the internal rad. cooler, it transfers heat better than any external cooler ever will. Their advice was to piggy back a cooler to the radiator, doesn't matter what side and get the biggest one you can fit.

Re: What trans cooler

great point, if the rad has a cooler, use it!

we talked about it a bit in the s10 swap thread, about halfway down the page

Re: What trans cooler

I used a condenser out of a vending machine. In 85 I put it in front of the radiator, this time under the passenger step and installed a tee for a temperature sender. Sitting idling to operating engine operating temperature the gauge reads 160. Did not move driving around the block a few times. I left room above it for a fan in case I have issue towing.

Just as DPowers uses, this is what I'm using in my truck and my street rod. Mounted on the frame alongside the trans. never a problem.

Re: What trans cooler

For those builders on a budget the mid 90's (square body) Ford explorer "plate style" trans coolers are the same thing that B&M sells for $200... - junkyard - $20

Re: What trans cooler

I still pack the scars on my left arm from slipping and falling on some antifreeze/trans fluid mess in front of my truck when I put it back together in 1982 and used one of those pop machine condensers as the trans cooler, the edges on those fins are like razors.

If you are going to run any kind of used wrecking yard cooler I'd highly suggest flushing it out good before installing it.

Re: What trans cooler

I have installed many of the stacked fin coolers like the b&m unit a few posts back. the nice thing is they have sturdy fins that are not sharp and don't bend easy and, also, if it is really cold, they have a bypass feature so they won't cool already cold fluid. from there I plumb into the rad trans cooler. this is what most trans shops will try to sell you as well. can't all be wrong, right? these units also have a fairly sturdy mounting flange as well as threaded inlet and outlet ports so barbed fittings or some other sort of hose/tube connections can be used.

Re: What trans cooler

if you end up going for a used cooler from the junkyard be aware that the plate coolers are almost impossible to get any filings out of, no matter how much you flush them. install a filter in the return line so you don't end up with filings from the scrapyard cooler inside your transmission. change that filter out after a short time of driving and cut the old filter apart to see what you have caught. that will give you a baseline for what was in the cooler when you got it from the yard. another good thing to do would be to check the fluid in the scrapyard trans before you bother taking the cooler. or drop the pan on the scrapyard trans first to be sure.

Re: What trans cooler

I used a B-M stacked plate unit like the one pictured but with a Tstat controlled fan because I mounted it under the bed where the air flow is not as good. Something not discussed here is using an OD trans requires more cooling as they build more heat. Higher stall converters require more cooling when used. If you have gone to a HP engine and the cooling system is marginal due to space/design constraints, plumbing the trans cooling into the radiator can only make it worse.

Re: What trans cooler

I have a new 10 row plate style 2005-07 ford 5.4 f250cooler 6"x23", got it off Craigslist for $20, from a guy that is a Ford Tech, said they come with new trans when they do warranty work but they do not replace them. He sells them on the side.
Will run in front of radiator and condenser. has mounting brackets and hose barbs.
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...434638&jsn=470

What ever you run ,I agree to use a external in line filter before the cooler,(and if a used cooler Id run a filter after cooler also) and temp gauge for the trans.

Re: What trans cooler

one would assume that when a manufacturer sends out a new cooler it would be installed because the manufacterer has done enough research to warrant the cost of the cooler. too bad for those poor Ford guys who thought they were getting a thorough job done because the dealer did it.

good catch on the high HP or already taxed cooling system. never thought of that because I will have lots of room for rad size and air flow i think.

Re: What trans cooler

i run a desert cooler radiator bought at brothers, dropped shipped from us radiator
it has the trans cooler in in the bottom tank of the radiator
the added bonus is it works as a heater/cooler, warming the trans oil on short trips
