Starter Squeal, what's the deal??

So, I just swapped out my 48 yr old dying starter for a remanufactured one on my 69 250 inline. Fortunately this takes all of about 20 minutes. First crank and there is a terrible squeal and clicking noise. Any suggestions on the problem and/or solution??? I'll be doing this in the rain today, so hopefully it's a quick fix!
Thanks all !!!

Re: Starter Squeal, what's the deal??

Did you keep the old starter if give it back for a core? I rebuilt mine. I also have never used any shims on my inline 250. Before I was done rebuilding mine I had one off another engine I put on.

It probably would have been cheaper to buy one. But, I plated a couple of the pieces and epoxy primed and painted the rest. It looks amazing and works great too.

I got all my parts from here - https://www.aspwholesale.com/starter-parts/delco.html

You have a 10MT
