Fabricate/Modify Suburban Sport Bumper Brackets

Anybody ever fabricate their own inner sport bumper brackets? Picked up a bumper and brackets off a Suburban to use on my shortbed. I knew the centers weren’t going to work, but I snatched them up anyway. I mounted it up using the outer brackets, but I was thinking about making a “filler” bracket out of some 4”x1/4” channel. Bolt one end to the frame of the truck and the other to the Suburban brackets.

Any of you ever done anything like this before? Looking for any pics/ideas that might be available.

Re: Fabricate/Modify Suburban Sport Bumper Brackets

Got home tonight and started nosing around. Didn't have any 4" channel, but I did have a chunk of 4" square tubing. Split it in half lengthwise and cut two pieces at 11". Fits perfectly. I still have to mark and drill the holes for the Suburban brackets (ran out of daylight). Even though I'll only catch two of the three bolt holes, I think this will work just fine.

Granted, it's not going to win any trophies at the Oakland Roadster Show, but for a daily, it looks like it'll work pretty well. Better than running just the outers, anyway.

Yeah. I snatched up an SB off a Sub @ the PnP. It had the rubber bumper, which I 86'd so you can see the mounting slots, but it sure beats the hell out of that nasty, rusted-out step bumper that was on it when I bought it.

Yeeeaaah...my Daily isn't really my daily right now. I dropped the oil pump and spun a bearing a few weeks ago, so I yanked the engine and RFMaster and I rebuilt a junkyard 305 for it. The engine is down at RF's place on the engine stand. We ran into some issues during break-in, which he is addressing.

Since the truck is down anyway, it seemed like a good time to knock out a bunch of little nuisance items; such as replace both sending units and the fuel tank selector valve, replace the hokey-ass flip kit brackets that were on the truck when I bought it and possibly notch the frame. Pulling the bed seemed like a logical choice. I hate rolling around on my back.
