Towing '98 crew cab 7.4 liter automatic overdrive
New to these trucks, I have a 1998 crew cab dually with a 7.4 liter, and an automatic overdrive transmission. I tow a pop up, I was wondering if I should tow it in in overdrive or drive, i know the newer truck have a push button to tow in over drive, just don't want to hurt the tranny towing in over drive.

You want the torque converter to stay locked if possible. So at freeway speeds, you should be fine in O/D, but at slower speeds, drop it in 3rd.
I am assuming you have 4.10 gears I tow a 9,000 camper with mine, and its in 3rd all the time. |

Thanks for the info. Not sure of the gear ratio, my camper is only like 3500 pounds.

I'd tow that with a 5.7L in overdrive. Convertor locked up isn't as important as trans fluid temp, that's all that really matters.

Torque converter slippage is the biggest cause of heat in an automatic transmission. If the converter is locked, you don't have to worry about heat.
