Gas Smell Around Outside of Truck

74 C10 350 single fuel tank passenger side. I purchased truck July 2015 and have always smelled gas around right side. Have not figured out why. My thought is aged fuel filler hose and vent hose. Appears to be original tank and possibly hoses. Cap has been replaced recently Any suggestions?

TIA

Re: Gas Smell Around Outside of Truck

Does yours have a charcoal canister? If not, the gas smell is normal. It is from the tank vent, witch is a short hose with a plastic piece on the end. My 75 has the HD emission package and has the same feature except on both side due to dual tanks.

The hoses could also be EOL. Worth checking anyway. On mine, one of the pair failed in the last couple years. Also check the suction hose from the tank to metal fuel line. If original, it is EOL as well.

Yes it does have the charcoal canister. Possibly bad? Smell has been real bad lately. More than before.

The gas these days kills rubber lines, Ethanol is really hard on them.

We don't even sell Rubber for that very reason, even the newer stuff that is "rated" for ethanol fails over time.

Re: Gas Smell Around Outside of Truck

Dead Parrot is dead on. My 83 C20 has a short piece of hose on the third nipple and the same one way plastic valve as the differential vent has. I bought a roll of fuel line on Amazon and got new vent valves from Classic Parts.
I have dual tanks, and I ran the vent hose from the tanks to the back of the truck and terminated them with some tie wraps near the bumper above the spare tire. It does not eliminate the smell (I can smell the gas when I am at the rear of the truck) but it is better than smelling it while sitting in the cab. I tie wrapped the vent hose along the inside of the frame rails.

Re: Gas Smell Around Outside of Truck

Does your gas tank have a rock guard on it? Mine rusted under the rock guard and I smelled it for a couple years before it started dripping. The rock guards holds dirt against the tank that retains moisture and eventually rusts it through. If no rock guard then it must be the hoses.

Re: Gas Smell Around Outside of Truck

Had similar problem with my '79 and turned out to be leaky connection at the fuel pump.

Re: Gas Smell Around Outside of Truck

Update. Replaced tank, sending unit, hoses. Original tank had been leaking at sending unit gasket (deteriorated) and started rusting thru where the plastic guard was. All is good now, and now gauge works great. Thanks for the advice.
