71 Chevy key questions

Hello,
I lost my door and ignition keys during the recent Thomas fire and have contacted a locksmith to see if they can rekey the truck. He thought I would need a serial number off the ignition in order to get a key for the ignition. Does anyone have any more info, suggestions or help?

Thanks for your help.

Years ago I gave the dealership the VIN and they made a key for my 68 C10
You can buy a lock set from LMC, would be another option.

Re: 71 Chevy key questions

Thanks for the help! I am not mechanically inclined so I am having a locksmith come and remove or possibly make another key.

If he doesn't work out, I will send it to Locdoc. I stumbled on some older threads and read up on the advice given about similar issues to this group. I just want to drive my new 71' Chevy! I need to get her on the road!

Cheers and beers!

Re: 71 Chevy key questions

I bought a complete OEM lock set from LocDoc and replaced them all at once.

Great deal and quick shipping.

Re: 71 Chevy key questions

It's also stamped on the ignition switch tumbler.

Fun fact, back in the day, GM only used about 10 different codes. A thief with a ring full of keys could steal any GM vehicle in short order.

Someone has misinformed you. For all GM vehicles from 1935 through 1966 there were 1499 different keys. For 1967 up there were about the same except that there were 4 different ignition keyways ("A", "C", "E", & "J") which effectively gave 5996 different keys for the ignitions.
