changing ring and pinion

Hi, I have a 69 C/10 it has a 72, 12bolt 307 rearend. I want to change the ring and pinion to a 373. My question is, Do I need to change anything else. I seen a 373 0n ebay, but the guy says if you have a 307 carrier it wont work. i also need a 373 carrier. Any help would be appreaciated. Also I'm not deadset on the 373, I could use alil advise on the rearend size also. I have a 350 with a 350 auto, it's just dead on take off. around 60 or 70 when i punch it, it does very well. it sounds like a beast, but i need 15 mile straight to wound it out.

Re: changing ring and pinion

put in an overdrive trans with that 3.73...200-4r is a bolt in for a turbo 350. the effective top gear ratio will be around 2.61. that means you will have awesome highway cruising AND better get up and go. a lockup converter is another good idea....save every last rev and reduce trans temps.

my dad swapped his 87 burb 2wd over from a 3.08 to a 3.73. it already had OD and so he "maybe" lost 1mpg. the weight, aerodynamics combined with new england hills may have been too much for that soft rear gear to handle. it still pulls of 18mpg. i say...have your cake and eat it too!

Re: changing ring and pinion

Do you have the special tools to do this job? If you dont, dont mess with it. It may look easy but rear diffs are the one place you dont want to experiment with, or you will be setting on the road waiting for a tow......Also 3.73 with that drive train combo will be real bad on gas. Turning high RPMS at 60/70 MPH.

Re: changing ring and pinion

Thanks friends for taking the time to give me some input. I'm shopping around for the carrier and gears. I'm goin with the posi 373. Not really gonna drive anywhere but around town, gas mileage not a concern, unless it goes to $5 again. Smitty you have a sweet lookin truck, and the low'n slow truck is a looker too. I hope to post some pics of my 69 when I figure out how to do it. Thanks again
