1972 Small Block 3 Line Fuel Pump

My 72 Cheyenne, 350 4bbl has a 3 line fuel pump, but it has the small can at the bottom. I can find no one who carries that. All 3 line have the much larger can which would require a longer steel fuel line. As near as I can tell, my truck is an untouched original. The canister is there and all the lines from the pump to the canister are there.

Can I just use the 2 line and cap off and ignore all the canister lines? I am sure my canister hasn't worked in years and I don't care about it.

I found a 1979-1980 small block 3 line short pump, but it says 9psi which I believe is too much pressure, plus I think it is the wrong size outlet.

Re: 1972 Small Block 3 Line Fuel Pump

The 3-line pump uses the small line to recirculate fuel to the tank to reduce vapor lock. It is not part of the vapor recovery system.

If you remove the canister from the system, you will need a vented gas cap and also must cap off the vapor line where it connects to the canister and plug the affected port(s) on the carburetor.

Re: 1972 Small Block 3 Line Fuel Pump

I think I want to keep the 3 line so I have the fuel return. If I switch to the taller fuel pump can, then I also need a longer fuel to carb line. Does anyone know which 3 line pump and fuel line will work on my 72 350 Quadrajet with A/C?

Re: 1972 Small Block 3 Line Fuel Pump

It's only about an inch difference or so isn't it? Seems that would almost be achievable by smoothing a few curves in the current line - but I can certainly see your dilemma if that's not possible. Rather than replacing the whole fuel line, you could splice in a nice metal fuel filter while you're in the process and perhaps retain your current line. I'd have no idea if a pump to crab line off the shelf at a place like inline tube or someone like that would have been bent for a deep or shallow can pump - I'd have to call and ask them. I never would have even thought of asking if I hadn't seen this thread, so thanks for sharing.
