Msd ready to run

Looking for input/opinions on the msd ready to run distributor 8360. With the blaster 2 coil. We are going to put it in our 383 build that is going in our 66 k20. We are concerned about the clearance issue near the firewall and this is why we are looking at this distributor. We did read about the issues with the coil but they were older posts. So any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Msd ready to run

That is a small cap distributor. I don't see why there could possible be any clearance issues. In fact I have never had any issues with a large cap HEI in the '63-'66 trucks with a small block in the original factory location.

Re: Msd ready to run

Me, I am always the critic. I wonder where the ball bearing is in that unit. I wonder what would happen when it goes out???

Polished steel shaft is QPQ coated and guided by a sealed ball bearing

I know what happens when the bearing goes out in the Water Pump.

Re: Msd ready to run

Thanks everyone, we were under the impression that we needed a small cap distributor because of the clearance issue.

Re: Msd ready to run

I have a ready to run MSD in my Jimmy. It's been there for 20 years now with no problem. I think I have an older Blaster coil on it.

On my kids Jimmy project we did the large cap HEI, and it is a TIGHT fit but you can make it work.

These are both on '72 vehicles, so clearance is a little different.

Re: Msd ready to run

Have one tn my 72 with a big block for 5 years now Baster 2 coil, plenty of room...No ignition box necessary and a built in rev limiter...Love it!

But why not stick with the small cap plan. You can also give DUI a ring and ask how their Dual-Power stacks up against the MSD Pro-Billet. And, I think(not positive) it's the street fire and not the pro-billet that doesn't have the bearing.

I sent a message to DUI making an inquiry. I am replacing my Skip white(which has been good to me for the price so far), the cap needs to be replaced... so I will just pop in a (hopefully) better unit. I myself am looking at MSD Pro-Billet and DUI small cap ready to runs with HEI style caps (it what my wires are crimped for).

Have fun!

Re: Msd ready to run

Get an ecore ford coil from a 90s v8. Much cheaper and a hotter spark. Been running one on my 72 that is hard on plugs at idle. I had to make a simple bracket for it but now it's on the fender well away from heat.

Re: Msd ready to run

Check out the Summit brand ready to runs. They use all MSD parts and are cheaper. Have a summit pro billet in my 427 small block and was in my vortec engine before that, not a single hiccup.

I considered that distributor also, but ended up purchasing the MSD a couple weeks ago. I bought it off Amazon $326. I haven't had a chance to install it yet. I'll put it in next time I have my hood popped. I will put a new module in the Skip White, clean it up, and shelve it as a backup. Hopefully 396 will get his ride on the road. So many choices on everything now days, it becomes paralysis of analysis.
