NP203 shifter

My truck was getting the tranny rebuilt, and the transfer case sealed.

Well anyways as they were getting it going the shifter stuck. I get there and it works again, but as soon as the wheels he the ground its stuck again.

Is there anyway to fix the box easily or should I invest in a twin stick.

Re: NP203 shifter

Did they take the 203 completely apart? Or did they just pop the outer seals? Does not make much sense that the shifter just goes out like that and jams up. There is a hole on the side of the shifter box similar to the linkage you would see on a car 4 speed where you can slip in a quarter inch bolt, and make the necessary adjustments.

Re: NP203 shifter

I will take a look at that later as the radiator blew the internal cooler, and flooded the tranny.

Re: NP203 shifter

some will jump in and tell you the 203 is junk and to get a 205. but for us with limited $ and that will not be doing hard core off road who think the 203 will do just fine here is my thread on converting your stock shifter to a twin stick. Only additional metal required is some flat bar for the second handle extension. Required a grinder or hack saw and basic welding skills. Takes a couple of hours once you have it on the bench.

kwmech, the stock shifter becomes junk when it gets worn, the lever will move the internal guts without disengaging the arm to the transfer. Look at the thread, lots of close tolerance bits that slip off track when worn.

I am very aware of that, but if they had the complete t-case apart it can throw things off. Also, if the shifter has a lot of crud in it and is misadjusted it can create problems also. I've repaired quite a few just buy cleaning, oiling and adjusting

Re: NP203 shifter

I'd put it in line to get cleaned up after the other trans disaster. Maybe try leaving it loosely mounted til the wheels are on the ground, then tightening the mounting bolts?
I have one lying around if needed...
