Dana 44 wheel bearing nut socket

I find a lot of companies claiming their socket will work on a Dana 44, but investigating I find they don't. 1965, Dana 44-5f, 19 spline, 1.25" axle. As close as I can measure it looks as the socket splines need to be 1 1/2" apart. Not sure about the Lisle 27250 as the thickness of the outer rim may keep it from fitting into the space around the nut. Anyone know a socket that works?

if you are stuck it ie quite easy to make a tool for that job. I just made one once out of exhaust tubing the right r dia. just cut out the lugs to fit; hacksaw or cutoff tool. drill a hole through it so that you can stick something thru it to turn it.
you don't have to run to the store everytime you need something; improvise

Only problem with that is according to the Dana manual this type of axle requires torquing the nut to 50lbs, not just finger tight. Figure 43 on page 15.

I also wrote this in the previous post; "drill a hole through it so that you can stick something thru it to turn it.". does that make any sense? snug it up and back it off a hair and locking washer and outer nut.
you can always weld a piece of metal on the end of the tube and make a 1/2" square hole for your torque wrench.

My solution will get you up and running with no problems. if you are insecure about it order your store bought and set the torque as how you like

this is a spindle that broke off on me about 25 years ago about 15 mi. north of williams lake.

it was actually a lucky day as the snap ring held it together as I was doing 60 and didn't know it until I could smell brake line. pulled over off the highway and pulled it apart. found out the problem and took the broken parts and hitch hiked back to Williams Lake and found an old auto wrecker and he had a spindle off an old jeep and it was the same (lucky day). hitched back and put it back together and made it home to Pr. George that evening; another 150 mi. I didn't have one of your fancy sockets , but I did have a hammer and a big old screwdriver and that did it

You were lucky ron. I have two sockets and neither is perfect. the rusty one is similar to ron's pic but has a sq for a t/wrench/ ratchet. the new one (with internal teeth) wouldn't even fit. had to clean up the teeth so they would fit into the nut cut-outs.

I don't see how the W1269 will work for me. My axle is 1.25" and space between the nut cutouts is 1.5 ". The W1269 is 2.25" The socket also looks too shallow I need about a 3" depth.

no part # for the rusty one. If your axle is a closed knuckle 1965 both will work. My axle is a dana 44-5f. don't know what else to tell ya. good luck.
