Repaint without pulling glass

If your considering painting your truck but don't want to pull the glass , You can lift the glass seal and insert a thin cord under the edge of the seal to lift it up enough to mask off that will give you a clean gasket edge against your new paint because nothing looks worse on a fresh paint job as paint on the gasket edge .

I just set this up for pics the truck is getting stripped today.

I assume this is motivated by the well-founded fear of removing the windshield, gasket, and trim, and never being able to get them back in correctly? Good tip.

That's good to know. When I painted the roof of my truck just before I had the new camper shell installed, I cleaned up the surface rust around the windshield (which I had pulled out, because of that rust). I painted the area below the windshield white because I didn't want to also buy orange paint for that small of an area, given what paint costs these days. I'll use your trick if/when I redo the orange parts to make it correct.

Will you please tell us more about the well founded fear of not being able to get the windshield back in correctly. My truck leaks around the windshield so I already know I have to pull it and fix some rust damage underneath.

Great tip. I plan to do that on my '67. Glass is out now and I plan to cut in the openings with the interior paint. The interior will get finish painted but the outside will be painted Hot Rod Flatz Red Oxide when it is first put together. I plan to fully build the truck without dealing with the body work, hence the primered look. It's all good solid used rust-free OEM sheet metal but I want it all one color. I'll deal with the body refinement once it's drivable, or not. I don't want the time or expense of the body/paint to hold things up. If it never gets painted I will enjoy it as a project-look forever.

I use the spline for screen windows. I ended up pulling the glass to paint the roof white

It's really just a matter of knowledge that's become pretty rare, especially among younger windshield installers. You need to match the gasket to the trim (there are shallow and deep versions) and put the trim in the gasket BEFORE you attempt to install the windshield. Someone who doesn't know how can fight it for a long time...

Amen to that! Best to pull the glass if you really want to preserve your truck. Rust has a way of hiding under the. rubber . But I have used the cord trick for a few quick and dirty touch ups
