Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

I am considering just replacing it with one jetted for an SC already but that costs cashish. I have a small amount saved to do one of the many projects.
first is definitely getting it running well. The mechanic I am speaking with says he wants me to get a wiring harness, MSD BTW and a distributor to start with.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

Keep it. Just gotta sort out the carb issues, timing, etc. The blower is nothing more than an air pump helping your motor overcome poor (natural) air. It helps push in air. Now the amount of boost can be adjusted by using different pulleys top and bottom.
def. adds to the cool factor whether or not it's making much boost. As long as it's not overheating, I would fix what's there.
My .02 cents.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

I have been trying to learn more about the motor and how everything works. I read a ton and have been reading a ton of posts. The SC whine is pretty cool at idle I have to say. I am sure I can find someone local to STS and Have a few beers. I lived in east mesa for 10 years before moving to texas.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

I had a very similar issue with a Holley 600 dbl pumper. When you floored it, nothing...Solution ended up being the accelerator cam. Someone had changed it. Find out what color is stock for your carb, buy a kit like this one.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mor-65531/overview/
Start with the one that was stock from holley. That will get you close. Keep learning and trying. You won't hurt anything changing those cams.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

Dang, a 6-71 blower! They cost well over $3K not including motor build.

I'm not sure how old that carb is? They can and do wear out.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

It isn't a 6-71 looks more like a 144 maybe a 177cid blower.[those are very cool]get it running right you can find someone that isn't trying to beat you out of it they are pretty expensive but you can remove it and replace the blower with a regular manifold. But you will still have the drivability issues.you can find help to get you in the right direction with it and the tune. good luck

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

I am not sure how to tell the model # on this SC. I would guess a 142 but not for certain. One guy at a cruise said it was a 471 no idea it looks cool and we'll get it so it works sooner than later once we address some of these other concerns.

Don't listen to anyone who just wants to throw parts at it.

What are your goals for the truck(street use/cruiser or do you plan to take it to the strip? For the street you'd be better off selling that double pumper and getting a vacuum secondary carb. That's not enough blower to justify buying a specialty carb, no reason an off the shelf carb couldn't be set up and you could probably take care of that yourself.

Solid advice right there, I had a mechanic that liked to do that rather than find the exact problem and it'll waste both your money and your time.

This. I don't think your run of the mill mechanic is gonna know a lot about tuning carbs, beyond the basics at least. I'm thinking about a couple of shops I'm familiar with and they would have no clue.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

Now this is where I need to get a reality check.

I want to use it as a sleeper truck. it needs to sound really good lopey like this [URL="https://youtu.be/JV8r8t2BgA8"[/URL] maybe a little more but not too much.
I want it to throw you back in your seat.
I do not plan on doing anything more than cruising, burnouts and have fun with it. I have a daily driver so that is not an issue.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

From my dad:

I'd suggest either a Holley 1850 600cfm or if he thinks the engine has a cam and stiffer valve springs and might exceed say 5000 rpm then the 3310 750cfm carb. In either case probally two jet numbers bigger on the primaries and three on the secondary. Secondaries on both do not have jets, but rather metering plates that need to be changed. He needs to have ignition set up, really more important than the carb. His 750(?) double pumper might work OK if dist set for 8-10 degrees initial and 34 degrees total, once that carb is set up right, but I bet engine is stock w/blower so 600 vacuum sec. carb prolly best.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

Sleeper and lopey do not belong in the same sentence, LOL! If you eventually want it fast it's best to make it run well as is and figure out exactly what is done inside the engine. Throwing a certain cam in only because it sounds "tough" will most likely hurt performance. There's plenty of books available on a Holley and if I were you I'd learn to tune it yourself.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

I told you I expecting a big helping of reality. Sleeper as in the way it looks. Here is a perfect example today this guy came up on me with his new Saleen mustang and was flashing his lights and then drove by me. The next light well it would have been fun to just smoke him

I need to get an idea of what it anything has been done to the motor. I uploaded a short clip it has stock manifolds http://youtu.be/BuhQ4dUrjNM

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

It will take more than a cam to walk a Saleen. Get it running right with what you have and save your money.

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

Understood maybe I should set my sights on a festiva. Baby steps. I still have to get a plan together I have about an extra 300-500 per month buying some parts for it would be great once I get it working. Do you think I should get this new distributor and msd btm. When you buy parts do you build for what you have or what you want to have?

Re: Should I keep it or trade it?

You don't need much more than a timing light and some Holley parts/tuning book for now. Then see what's been done to your engine already so you can put a good combo of performance parts together to maximize HP.
