Re: 1948 Suburban - finishing what dad started...

hey guys, just a quick update here.

We go the frame blasted and painted over the last couple of weeks. It looks killer, but I didn't take any pics at the time. I'll get some once it's more complete. Body man is working on getting the bottom side of the Sub to look as good. Once frame is rolling we'll get it him and put the body on, so the painter can keep rolling. Thanks!

Re: 1948 Suburban - finishing what dad started...

Here are some shots of the frame as Tom and I worked on getting some of the things put back together. We put the front end back on, dropped the motor and trans in, mocked up some exhaust, and put the rear end back together. We still have some odds and ends for the frame that need blasted and painted, but some nice progress nevertheless.

Re: 1948 Suburban - finishing what dad started...

So it's been a while, but we did the Suburban back from paint a week or two ago. While there the painter replaced the wood floor with new 3/4" treated wood, tucked the front bumper, and some other misc. changes. We got the truck back in 'dad's shop' and will start some final assembly we make some time in our schedules. Plus, we need to clear the cobwebs on what we need to do.

To recap, the frame is about 90% complete with paint done, lines ran, tank mounted, and suspension complete. We need to check seals on the rear end, and go through the brakes yet. Maybe clean up some overspray, dirt. Inside we need rerun wiring, remount AC/Heater, install controls, insulation, and then finish it out. Last we talked I think a lot of metal will be exposed keeping the overall design simple inside. Motor and trans will be checked, painted, and then dropped in. Hopefully we'll get moving again soon.

Re: 1948 Suburban - finishing what dad started...

One of my brothers and I worked on tearing down the motor yesterday. Probably farther than it needed to go, but we'll get everything cleaned up and squared away for a bunch of low maintenance miles.

Re: 1948 Suburban - finishing what dad started...

Got a little more done this. We spent most the time under the dash putting in some components, routing some wiring, and all that kind of fun stuff. We've got a list things to work, some parts to order, and a call for some help from our local guys next weekend.

Progress was made and we look forward to more.

Re: 1948 Suburban - finishing what dad started...

We had another burban work day, this time we invited some of our local gurus and club friends over. We worked on the wiring, door poppers, power window regulators, engine assembly, and added cruise to the steering column. Lots of other misc odds and ends were worked and another parts list was made.

Motor came back from the machine shop and looked awesome. We didn't want to get carried away on the LT1, so a cleaning and light machine work is all it got. We do have replace the cam because it was corroded from sitting. Bottom end is pretty well buttoned up, so when the cam and rollers show up it's game on.

Progress is progress and all day in the shop with friends and life long car builders is always kick ass!

Re: 1948 Suburban - finishing what dad started...

Another working Saturday this past weekend. Chipping away at it. A little more wiring, got the contacts installed, more of the motor put back together, and added to the parts list.

My brother also worked on the taillight lens.

Re: 1948 Suburban - finishing what dad started...

So it's that time of year. We took the turkey day to work on the 48 some more. I only took a single picture, but we finished wiring in the taillights and mounted the covers, did some more wiring upfront, glued in the windshield, cleaned up and checked over the front suspension, as well as tore down the trans to prep for new outside seals. We also created yet another list of parts and things to do, but more importantly we scheduled a couple more dates to get more work done!

slow but sure.

that's old brother and he's a lot bigger than me... soo lol
also, the painter will do a final cut/buff with touch up when the truck's back together, so we should be able to correct the minor stuff yet.

Re: 1948 Suburban - finishing what dad started...

More shop time today and the guys worked with the crew one other time this month, so things are getting marked off the list slow but sure. More glass and seals were put in, the trans is sealed, motor is looking like a motor, the grill was assembled, some misc brake lines where done, tweaking the doors... all kinds of little things.

A couple more shots of the guys working and messing with the Coys. We couldn't get his wide wheels to fit in the back due to offset, but the overall diameter was close enough to put in on front for a visual. I doubt we spend mom's money on upgrading, but I like the black.
