Wonky Gas Gauge 1998 Suburban

The gas gauge in my 1998 GMC 2500 Suburban (with a 454) has been acting strange since I bought the truck a few months back. It stays around full for most of the time but sometimes it just drops down to empty, stays there for a few seconds and goes back up to full. Other than suddenly dropping to empty and bouncing back up to full, it never goes below about 3/4 of a tank. Any ideas what could be causing this? Do you think it's the gauge or the sending unit?

Thanks,

Rod
