Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

I finally picked up an engine. It is a 96 VIN F 6.5 TD from a 1 Ton Dump Truck. It turned over fine but wouldn't start on its own. Guy said it was parked due to fuel issues.

I got complete engine, wiring, computer, radiator and couple more goodies for $300. I have pictures on my build thread.

I guess one of my first steps is finding wiring diagrams and information which you seem to have found or worked out considering you rewired the entire thing it seems.

I still plan to pick up another spare 95 engine w/ all wiring and accessories but I would like to run the 96 setup. It has serpentine setup and dual alternators.

I didn't even notice. How do I know for sure if it was obdII? I didn't take the plug, I didn't even consider taking it. I don't even remember seeing the OBDII plug. I took all under hood wiring, wiring for the computer that was in the glove box and the wiring for the pedal. I think 96 was kind of interim year for OBDII, right?

So looks like you must be right. All vehicles made after 1/1/96 had OBDII. I wonder does that make it more complicated or less?

Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

If the ECM was behind the glove box then it is not a 96.

It definitely was there. I have been trying to look up the VIN. Owner stated 96, does it matter it was a 1 ton dump truck?

1GBKC34F3TJ109734 is the vin. I just did a vin lookup and it says 96.

Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

Update. Truck ran great tell it got 150 miles on it and boom! I was showing off and speed shift while still boosting and stripped out third gear. Scared the crap out of the kid I had with me. It was my mistake as I had tore trans apart once before and didn't reshim it. I got new gears from Tremec that are a little stronger. I shimmed it tight tight this time. Truck now has about 1000 miles on it. Not easy miles ether! First tank got 18mpg second 20mpg I am still on third tank. Truck is pretty quick but will be building a full manual 4l80 for it. Will also be building a new tune for it with every thing we can through at it.

Sorry to hear of the trans issue, but quick fix! I'll tell you, the truck looks awesome! Great work on it!

Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

i'm running a full manual 4L80 in mine. gonna get this shifter:
http://www.tciauto.com/tc/fast-gatetm-shifterhtml
looked at a lot of them and seems like the best.
chasing fuel leaks and changing filter faster, relocate the FFM to fender.
for a better connection, do the battery bolt mod.
was really surprised you decided to go electronic.
love the 2 piece crossover. would make it easier to mess with.
truck looks great and runs even better.

Thanks. Yea I put stronger gears in it and has held up fine. 4l80 takes a lot of power to drive. I didn't want too lose that's much power. I went electronic because at the time I could get the most power. Now their building pumps that run like garden hoses. It's nice though with cruise and high idle.

I'm just following thru this build that Marv sent me and wanted to clarify a few things since i'm the 6.5L nut.

The oddball injection pump was in 1994 and has DS4-5068 on the label. It's an easy fix in the PROM chip to swap that pump onto any year 6.5. Easy is a term relative to me since I can do the tuning.

Don't let any years of the 6.5 electronics scare you away. I can help out, just let me know and we'll continue these sweet builds!

The 4L80E does take a bit of power to drive but on the 6.5L's it's also a slug due to heavy torque manage settings in the PCM. Slap a 2200 stall converter in and remove the torque manage with an Intercooled Holset, and you are pushing the limit on the torque rating of a stock 80E.

If the tune you build blows this trans then good! I have a fully build 4l80 full manual I want to swap in. I was originally going 4l80 with manual valve body but could not locate one. I now have tons of them.

He wasn't understanding me I guess. He want reliability and didn't even now how to tune it.

He had limited knowledge of the 6.5 and the electronics portion. I figured best would be mechanical injection. The 6.5 is a different animal most tuning software will not mess with it. Tuners that know what they are doing are hard to find.
