adjusting door lines

I am fixing to paint my truck and replace the rocker panels and door seal at the same time. A long time ago I had the doors off the truck for something and when I put them back on the passenger door barely rubs the fender, mostly in the top 6" but its enough to scrape the paint. The door opens and shuts fine. If you are looking at the door with it closed, it looks like the whole door needs to move to the rear but I don't see how the hinge adjustments could accomplish this. The door did not rub before I took the doors off so I know its not the fender. Any ideas or suggestions?

But unless I'm missing something it looks like the hinges only allow for in an out adjustment not front to back.

The other side of the hinge adjust front to back.

The door is full adjustable. Remove the door catch and adjust the door to the cab, forget about the fenders for now. Once the door is perfectly aligned with the cab, set the door catch back on and and adjust it so the door latches without rubbing. Then go back and align the fenders with the doors.

The bolts on the door side adjust the in and out in relation to the fender/ cab corner. The bolts on the body side of the hinge move the door fore and aft[forwards and backwards] in the door opening [or pocket as known in the body biz]. Also Make double barrel sure the cab bushings in the front of the cab haven't fallen so much that the cab/ and front have sank in together on that side making the mount basically "low" there just as if you had minor frame damage.[That is how far off the bushings CAN make stuff out of alignment]Even though the door is rubbing at the top or towards the top you still need to check the hinges by opening the door and seeing if the will shake up and down, that is opposite of the character of one with bad bushings they make the door rub at the bottom when the droop, but still worth checking if your adjusting cause they have to be right to get a good adjustment. Had the doors off today to replace the rockers. I can't get the passenger door lined up right to save my life. I actually think it's the fender more than the door. My plan of attack is this: This is my daily driver not to mention that I make my living with this truck. When I get ready to paint it in a few weeks I will remove the door and fender. Align the door to the cab and then do whatever I have to to get the fender to line up. How much play is there in the fender?

I'm not sure exactly what point your at right now, but the door needs to be aligned to the cab, then put the new rocker on aligning it to the door & cab, then align the fender to the door. If you put the rocker on with out the door in-place your odds are it won't line up.

And as previously mentioned the cab mounts & supports all should have been check first & fixed if there were any issues. ( Door hinges need to be checked also )

take some paint mixing sticks (hardware store) stack them to the desired door gap you are looking for, and tape them to the area under the door, (on top of the rocker area) this will allow the door to sit at the desired gap top and bottom, then all you have to do is adjust the forward to rearward gap, I know in the body and paint FAQ's, there is a procedure of which bolt to loosen just a small amount with the other being snug, allows you to "Pivot" the door depending on whether you loosen the door side bolts, or the hinge pillar side (on the cab)hope this helps.
