1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne K30 Extended Cab Dually REBUILD thread.

After acquiring what was left of this pretty well known old truck a few weeks ago, we have decided to keep it and built it, returning it to is old glory with a little Rottenwood Garage flair. We had a brainstorming session this weekend and a direction has been decided and a shopping list has been put together. Because we have so many other current projects going on this one may take a little longer than normal, but we are ready to get started.

Board member "Blazerman" was the last owner of it while it was running and driving. He would have a better timeline than me however the information I have indicates the "good" picture was taken around 2007. It was later stripped of the tires and wheels, all running gear, suspension and steering and sold to a man in south Texas where is has been sitting in a swamp for about 5 years.

It will be good to see Robs old truck back on the road again. Here is a picture of it beside member "IvelDesigns" (Levi's) truck in 2008.

Re: 1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne K30 Extended Cab Dually REBUILD thread.

The "heartbeat" of this project arrived today. We had to make a 600 mile round trip but we made it home and the transformation can now start. Shes going to be a 5 speed, 12V, Cummins with 354 gears. Highway cruise monster!

Time to roll some coal!

If he's doing drive train only, there's no Dodge involved, just Cummins, Dana, and New Process

AMEN Panelman!

Minimal forethought posts like that are part of the reason I stopped visiting/posting on this board. I was wondering how long it would take. 7 days. It looks like not much has changed. Unfortunately there may be some "for Dodge" accessories used, such and the brake components on the axles, clutch slave, master cylinder. radiator and so on, so if non specific GM made parts cause anyone grief, this may not be the thread for you. I wonder what percentage of non GM manufactured "made in China" parts end up in all classic GM builds. HMMM

Subbed! I love the direction your going with it. I've thought about a 12 valve and 6 Speed for my K/20 more than once. Build this thing the way you want and don't worry about others!

I think this is going to be a great truck when its all together. I bought a rolled over 02 dodge & used the whole drivetrain & frame under my 72- works great

Man the years are flying by...seems like I saw that truck recently but I guess it would have been around '06 at the Midwest Nats. Sad that it was put out to pasture, glad you have a plan!

Man, that poor truck! I almost bought the body from Rob when he was selling it, I just couldn't swing it at the time. That poor thing sure did look horrid in your pics! It looks like it washed up decent. How did it fare? Any major rust now? And heck yes on your donor! That worked out slick. If anyone gives you grief, they don't have a clue. That rotary pump engine will fire up in a 1/4 of a revolution, and you'll be getting 18-22mpg's. Make sure you fix the KDP before you stuff it in the truck. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I really look forward to seeing this one put back on the road!

The truck held up well. There is some minor rust here and there but nothing too involved. The paint will have to be addresses eventually so a few rust spots and body filler cracks are no concern. The only part of the truck that really had bad rust were those HIDEOUS rear fender steps and I plan on cutting them off and replacing them with something that actually looks like it belongs on the truck. We may also change the X-cab windows to something that fits that area a little better. The donor truck runs like a top and fires up before the key can be turned all the way. It only has 177K on it and had a freshly built rear and transmission. The only reason we trailered it was for simplicity, bald tires and the injector pump was leaking a bit.

Good deal! I highly recommend still popping the gear housing cover off and at very least checking to make sure the tap is tabbed. If not, tab that dowel pin before you're doing a gear housing swap later down the road.
