Removing the spicer knobs?

So I found a really nice set of 3/4 ton hubs with the blue Spicer knobs in my stuff today.

I'm trying to take them apart and getting that stupid clip off that holds the Spicer knobs seems impossible. My e-clip tool doesn't want to do it, and various other attempts aren't working either. Is there a trick, or am I just being a dufus?

Re: Removing the spicer knobs?

Is the spicer hubs still on the axle or are you trying to remove just the blue dial from outer chrome ring?

No its all off, just trying to take the clip off inside the chrome hub so I can slide out the blue knob.

Re: Removing the spicer knobs?

Going by memory, you should be able to turn outer chrome ring that houses the blue dial upside down. Compress the large spring lightly to were you can push out metal pin running through the blue dial completely. You can use a smaller diameter size punch to push it through. Please be careful when removing the pin, you don't want to crack the plastic blue dial. Once the metal pin is removed it should all come apart.

Re: Removing the spicer knobs?

Yeah all of that part is done ... no damage lol. Now I want to get the blue spicer knob out and there is a e-clip or ring clip, not sure what everybody calls them. Anyway I cant get it spread apart in such a way that it will slip out of the grove it is in. This is all inside the chrome housing. Im assuming this holds the knob in. Ive been very carful not to put a tool anywhere on the outside of the knob to pull or pry with. Its a very close to perfect specimen.

Re: Removing the spicer knobs?

Okay good, yes there is a snap ring holding the dial in the outer chrome ring and it's hard to remove. Here is a link that may help.

Re: Removing the spicer knobs?

That is an excellent thread on dealing with taking these apart, lubing, and putting them back together. I bookmarked it. And as I was afraid, it said taking out those snap rings is a PIA lol. Looks like I just need to work it some more

Yes I agree, I found it a few years ago when I was working on a set of my hubs. Just had to find it again, Lol. We don't want to take any chances messing up a set of blue spicer hubs! That is my favorite part on the ole K20's.

I agree! The ones on my truck now are super nice. I'm undecided what I'm going to do with these since they are a newly re-found treasure lol. I did want to take them completely apart and inspect them before I make any decisions on what to do with them, keep or sell. I had two complete NOS assemblies awhile back and probably sold them for too little (buy high sell low is my mantra haha). Ill have to do some board research to see if they are even worth letting go.

Thanks again for your help!
