My 1958 Corvette - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My first restoration was a 58 Vette. I bought the car in 1983 and finished a frame off restoration in 1987. In 1988, the car received a NCRS Top Flight award in May and the Bloomington Gold award in June. After passing the NCRS Performance Verification test in 1989 it received the Duntov Award in 1990, in Williamsburg, VA, with a score 98.9.

The car has the 245HP dual carb optional 283 and 4-speed.

All the pictures of the car below were taken last summer when I showed the car and truck (completed last year) together for the first time. The last picture from 1989 is of Zora Arkus-Duntov presenting the award named in his honor. Of course, I look the same but my son now towers over me.

Nice car! Meeting Zora Arkus Duntov had to be a thrill. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity. Do you still have the Corvette?

I still have the car, but I'm scared to risk driving it. I keep it in a humidity controlled trailer and only drive it every couple years for about 25 miles. That's part of the reason that I took a few liberties with originality when I restored the truck. I hope to drive it more often.

Thanks! You lost me with the comment about Red though. Maybe I'm too old to get it. The picture was taken in northern Wisconsin at a place called the Petroleum Museum. It's the only time the car has been shown other than the judging events I mentioned. Also was the first time for the truck.

Ahh... that does look like my car. As an interesting anecdote, when our son was in college some of his friends apparently told him I reminded them of Red.

"Humidity controlled" may not quite be the correct term. I use a device I bought years ago that is designed to prevent condensation and reduce mildew in stored RVs. Basically it is small heat element enclosed in a perforated metal box about 12"X12"X4". It helps keep the temp inside the trailer a bit warmer and more consistent than that outside the trailer and also helps circulate the air via convection. It is said to consume about as much electricity as a 60 watt incandescent bulb.

Very good; and the trailer itself is just your typical enclosed car trailer?

I have a 24' Haulmark, which is why I ask.

It's an enclosed Pace American 18' long, 8' wide and fairly low profile. Maybe 5'9" high inside. It just fits in my 8' high garage door.
