Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up

Been trying to make some progress.

I got a P/S Pump & bracket from board member 68bowtie thanks a ton!

Went to mount it up and of course with this truck... The holes in the 327 were not fully drilled & tapped so I had to do that as well.

I also found some 35x12x16.5 BFG Rollers on craigslist for $100 bucks I Just picked them up and will mount them on my Slot Mags tomorrow and polish them up

Funny is the guy I picked them up from recognized me (went to school with my wife)

I can't go anywhere...

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up

I think that's a good idea.
I've learned when on a tight budget, to leave things running and mobile until I am ready to do a full swap. Keeps you from getting the feeling of being overwhelmed, especially when stuff sits all apart and in the way.

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up

Got the P/S pump all mounted after getting the proper pulleys thanks to 68Bowtie
new fan belts as well...

New sending unit and gas tank all flushed out. I got the sending unit from Brothers and while pricey is a really nice piece.

Got the gas tank mounted back up. It is a tight fit with the DIY4x shackle flip. Clearly they used a pickup to fab it up. Still a nice piece. I also noticed I had forgot to install one of the bolts in the shackle flip years back so I had to drill out another hole and went and retightened all the bolts while I still had access.

New J hooks as the old hardware was pretty screwed up.
Just about ready to start her back up for the first time since 2009

Also I need to either trim part of the tow hitch or Shackle flip a tad to bolt it back up.

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up

Well she wouldn't start, after lots of fussing around and tracking down little problems including clogged fuel lines I replaced the fuel pump and VROOOM she runs again and at the flick of the key. I am pretty happy.

I have brake lines on order from Inline tube to replace the broken ones and some extended brake lines from ORD, track down the clutch issue and it should drive... well sort of

Glad to hear she is running again! That is certainly a step in the right direction. Did you put any cushion between the tank and frame, and between the straps and Tank? If not I would recommend both.

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up

got a whole stainless steel brake line set from Inline Tube

which they sent me a package for a blazer of course and didn't call back after they "checked into it" like they said they would....

"extended" stainless steel brake lines from Off Road Design which I am VERY impressed with but I should have ordered longer as the rear line is the exact same length as my old rubber line.

Going to go ahead and pull off all the brake lines and match them up to the new ones as I don't think they match well AT ALL... we will see

Also noticed the fuel line is HACKED when they installed the aux tank so I am going to replace that as well. Our 69 Pontiac Lemans caught on fire from a faulty fuel line (it is fine) so I am not going to skimp on that...

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up

if it were me personally, (and i don't know your whole story other than what you posted) i'd re-package it up and send it back and get your money back. Then go get a nice double flaring tool and stainless lines and build your own. I had my extended brake lines made at a local line shop and they fit great. they look to be too long, but when i flex my truck out, they still have a little play so i'm happy with them.

Good luck bud,

Jack

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up

Well Inline Tube has not returned any of my calls or emails. Just a horrible company, horrible product even. Comparing my old lines to theirs it looks like they just took random lengths of tube and bent them in random haphazard ways. Hell they don't even match each other

I went to auto zone and got some steel tube and made my own damn line to replace the broken one and it was not near as hard as I thought it would be. I actually look forward to replacing the rest of my line and bending it, etc.

Hopefully Inline tube will refund me...

Sorry you had to learn the hard way...
I do not know how that company manages to stay in business, since it seems everyone I have seen on this forum and others always ends up pissed off dealing with them.

I know in my case, they hosed me down good on shipping alone.

I mean at least tell me I am SOL but no response at all is the worst tact a company can have.

I should have done more research which is not like me at all.

Either way the 68 is closer and closer to being on the road.

The next thing I have to do is figure out why the clutch pedal won't return/clutch won't engage

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up

Anyone have pictures of the clutch setup? How the Z bar and rod hooks up? Clearly something is off with mine and I can't figure it out... (sm465)

Also Inline said they will refund the parts but with the shipping both ways I am still out a decent amount of $. They said the problem is "Because mine is a GMC it has leaf springs and not coil" I then argued the point all 4x4s were leaf spring...

That is helpful also if you could get how the rod goes from the z bar to the tranny. No rush at all.
