Replace u-joint with CV joint ??

Hello together..

since my LS1 / 4l60e swap into my 51 chevy pickup....do i have a Vibration between 65 to 80 mph...
So far i read hours for hours about pinion angle etc. etc. and tried some alignments without satisfying results...

Therefore i am thinking just to replace the sensitive U-Joints with some CV-Joints.. but so far i did not find any thread in the www to such a Replacement...

Would be great if u can give some Feedback , if an Installation of CV-Joints at a drive shaft is possible ??

Hope to hear from you soon

Thanks
Achim

Re: Replace u-joint with CV joint ??

Sure.

Denny's driveshaft carries all the parts. Make sure you get the proper weld-in yoke for your tube and make sure to weld the yoke in phase.

I've done it.

Re: Replace u-joint with CV joint ??

Angles...

With u-joints, you want the angle at the trans and the angle at the pinion to match. So if your driveshaft has a 5 degree down at the trans end, you want a 5 degree up at the pinion end. Basically you want the output shaft of the trans and the pinion shaft to be parallel with each other. Also true for side-to-side where you want the angles to match between the trans and the pinion. If you really want to get technical, you actually can run the pinion 2-3 degrees down from where you want it to compensate for torque while you are moving.

With a CV, you want the pinion to point directly at the tailshaft of the trans. There should be 0 degree difference between the pinion angle and the driveshaft angle.

Re: Replace u-joint with CV joint ??

Hy

thanks for the Information..

to put the rear axle to the same line / angle than the drive shaft shouldnt be a Problem ... i do have a 4-link Setup

Would you recommend a double cardan slip yoke ? i want to stay with a one Piece drive shaft....

Are these double cardan Joints are less sensitive against vibrations etc. ??

thanks
Achim

So parallel but offset?

Re: Replace u-joint with CV joint ??

They don't have to be offset.

Double cardan joints are common on 4x4's where angle is extreme enough that it would wear a regular pair of joints out quickly.

They were also used on Cadillacs in the 60's and 70's to minimize vibration.

I built some shafts for a buddies Ford Bronco Cummins conversion. He hasn't complained. Sorry no pictures.

Slip-yoke all depends on your transmission. There has to be slip somewhere. If you have a slip yoke output on your trans then that is where the slip goes. if your trans has a fixed output, then the slip will be built into the shaft. **TYPICALLY** a CV will be used with a fixed output and use a slip on the shaft. Actually, I have never seen a CV used with a slip type trans output.

Re: Replace u-joint with CV joint ??

Hy all

yesterday i made some more test drives...

I really get crazy some days.....

I have a fully bagged (Front / Rear) chevy pickup 51 (4-link Setup) ... according to the Air Ride i am able to Change the pinion angle during i am cruzing..

the vibrations appear starting at 75 til 85 mph...

What have been tested so far...

--> Changing gear from overdrive to third (while cruzing at Vibration Speed)
--> Changing gear from overdrive to neutral (while cruzing)
--> changing pinion angle via Air Ride (while cruzing)
--> drive shaft balanced
--> Wheel balanced

....finally nothing helps !!!!

Maybe i am not able to Change the angle enough (via Air Ride)...???

Or maybe the vibrations are coming from the engine or engine Mounts ?

Or maybe front Wheel alignment can occur vibrations ? ( i had the car at a shop for alignment, but i was not satisfied with the result , therefore i tried to improve the alignment at home)

Or maybe the Transmission and rear axle is not in parallel (Top view) ???

What do u think ...what else can be the reason ?? what should i do ?

As already mentioned i plan to Change the U-Joint to CV-Joint ... i am just waiting for an offer from GKN Germany

Hope to hear from you soon :-)
Thanks a lot
CU

Have you had your tires and wheels checked for balance?

What are your angles? Have you actually measured them?

Re: Replace u-joint with CV joint ??

So just a thought. When you change the ride height at cruise you are changing both angles, at the trans and the rear end essentially changing nothing.

Re: Replace u-joint with CV joint ??

Hello

thanks for your feedback....but why do you think that the angle will not change ??

Pls consider that i have a triangulated 4-link setup.. that means the upper and lower bars have a different length..
So in my opinion , the angle is changing when i change the rear ride heigt..

What do you think ??

ps:
Some month ago i checked the angles, unfortunately i cannot remember the exact data.... but i used a special app on my iphone. The result out of the app was ok that time..

So far ..i was not able to check if the transmission and rear axle is parallel from the top view.... i hope you understand what i mean

thanks
achim

Re: Replace u-joint with CV joint ??

Just like the video they would show us at GM school.

He needs to set the training aid up with a double cardon joint and do that test again
